Pronounce "FrugalToque" out loud, then answer this poll
« on: May 12, 2017, 05:41:19 PM »
At fellow moderator swick's house, and the word "toque" came up, and apparently I have been mispronouncing FrugalToque's name for years.

(You would have seen the name as a moderator here on the forums, and as featured in these 8 MMM blog posts).

How have you been pronouncing it?

(I guess it's a Canadian word for a hat--what we call a beanie. Google image search for Toque.  Those of you who were with me, you've learned something today!  :) )

Its a winter hat that covers your ears. My name shiuld show my expertise. More obvious in french. Tuque.

As a dumbass 'Merican, I always had heard of this hat.  I never saw it spelled.  I always thought it was spelled "took".

I am taken back to my days of youth:  Bob and Doug McKenzie comedy routines with Geddy Lee singing "Take Off to the Great White North".

...and surely there is someone out there pronouncing it "toe-cue".

Well, the way I've been saying it isn't even an option.  I thought it was toe-kay, like a Spanish word.

Because of their severe winters that require specific winter clothing? :D

You obviously missed out on Bob and Doug McKenzie's "Great White North" - a series of skits performed by Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas from SCTV. It was definitely a Canadian-stereotype, but damn they were funny, and everyone that ever saw the episodes or had the albums knew how to pronounce the word because of their 12 Days of Christmas: "FIVE GOLDEN Toques!!"   ;D

12 Days Of Christmas McKenzie Brothers

They got so popular, they put out a hilariously amazing adaptation of William Shakespeare's "Hamlet" for the big screen starring the characters - Strange Brew.

Canadian so I can pronounce it.  What is the American equivalent?  My guess is 'knitted hat' and Mr. Pachnik who is from Quebec agrees.   Curious about other ideas though.

I pronounce it tock, as in the tick tock of a clock, even though I know it's meant to be tuke like duke. So none of the above (and I refrained from voting).

Can't tell you the American equivalent, but in Australia and the UK we'd call it a beanie.

In plain blue-collar American, under a century's linguistic influence of the armed forces, a 'watch cap', though not technically a cap but rather a hat.

Google the phrase and see 'em from five to a hundred and twenty bux each...

No, not Mechanic's Cap and not six thousand yen, as originally conceived

Your options don't sound like toque.
2k might be my 2018 pronounciation.
Toke is what you do with a joint

A toque is best approximated above withe the Duke with a t approach.

"Took" we say differently. I mean, I think you're on target, if we just look at "took" straight up, but "took" (as in, past of take) and "toque" are pronounced differently. Though, I wonder if that's untrue depending on which part of Canada! How do Newfies say the past of take?

And then beanie, I have a completely different hat in mind!

I confirm, it's tuque!

It's from Québec so, even toque is a derivative (mis-spelled and mis-pronounced)

The best way I can help you to pronounce it is to come in Québec and learn. There is no other way to explain, even the "Duke" with a T is not exactly correct. I guess it's very difficult for you to pronounce tuque properly!

Didnt voted btw...

Thats what Canadian Ben mean, -15C is not cold enough to require that kind of clothing. It's designed for -40C or less!

Like Jooni, I always thought beanies were different (I thought shorter).  Whereas a tuque usually has a fold up brim so in really bad weather you can unfold it and bring it over your eyebrows.

Cold is cold - a few winters ago the daytime temps were in the -20s and the nights were consistently -30s.  Of course warmer usually means snow storms and high winds, so all we can do is hold out until spring.

Tokay is a type of fortified sweet wine but we can't use it anymore because the EU said so. I'm not sure whether they're protecting the Hungarian tokaji or they've realised we're on a good thing. We now have to use the word topaque.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Muscadelle

The EU is just splitting hairs...like this poll 😛

I also thought beanies were shorter too and not necessarily knitted.  Interesting that a few of us Canucks think that.

We'd call it a "ski cap" even though there would be no mountains within 5 hours of here and they're common in the winter.

Learned something new today! As a lifelong Californian, I thought "toque" was just another nonsense non-word of that sort we see all the time in screen names, and thought nothing of it. We put hats on our heads to provide protection from sunburn. It is my new vocabulary word of the day.

I was REALLY confused by the options, because I didn't see rhymes with "duke".  The "two-k" I was reading as "two kay", which wasn't right.  Although it did make me think of two-four and Jacob Two-Two.  We've grown up watching Canadian TV as well as local US TV, since we're in a border area.
