Political Mustachian
« on: September 11, 2013, 01:45:53 AM »

I've been 'early retired' for 6 months now and I have to say life has never been better. I have, as you might expect, spent  a lot of time on hobbies  but I have also found myself being involved in a most unlikely pursuit - political mustachianism

It so happens that in my particular district that our local city council has been on a borrowing and spending spree over the  last decade. The spending has been on large projects like art galleries and new sports venues. I and many others have some real concerns that the spending has been over the top and has put our district in a precarious financial position ( too many details for this forum).

Anyway, we are about to have our local elections in a few weeks and I have been the 'campaign manager' for a small group of individuals who are campaigning on a 'mustachian' style platform.

We have not called ourselves 'mustachians' but the principles are exactly the same. We need to live within our means and prioritise our spending as a community.

At this early stage the signs are all good and there seems to be an understanding of the need to rein in the spending. The alternative is a dramatic increase in property taxes or an unsustainable future for our children.

My first foray into politics has been very enlightening and I must say quite satisfying. An experience I would not have considered if I was still locked into the Monday- Friday grind.

Anyone else out there who find that their local officials are spending up large? Anyone dabbled in local body politics?

Good stuff.

What region of NZ are you campaigning in?

New Plymouth. 10 years ago $10 million in debt, 2013 $110 million in debt
10 years ago approx 300 employees, 2013 over 600 employees
10 years ago a nest egg worth over $250 million, 2013 less than $100 million
(possibly worse but they won't release the details)

Good for you nz! Glad to hear your ER has been fulfilling and that you're putting your abilities to use in such a meaningful way.

Here in the States I live in Fairfax County Virginia. It's an insanely expensive county, with a government that never saw a dollar they could not spend. It's also a large county (probably 1-2 million people?), so politics here is pretty sophisticated/professional and full time. During the heyday when housing was going through the roof (pre-2008), property taxes skyrocketed without limit. Ours doubled in just 3 years; thankfully I was not an old person on a fixed income. There is no appeal of assessments. Last year we paid $15,000 in property taxes on our modest primary home and 2 very modest rental homes (primary home alone was $7000 of that total). And somehow the government finds a way to spend every cent collected, any surplus is always spent.

We do get good services in return, and since it's a high income area (and pretty pretentious IMO), it has good schools and so on. But I could definitely go with less luxury and more fiscal prudence. It has a reputation of being a very welcoming place if you're in need of "assistance." People living in free or subsidized housing here are typically in pretty luxurious apartments with pools, gyms, on-site security, cable TV included, lounges, concierge, etc.

My small town is pretty tight. I thought about city council run, but the good ol boy network is pretty thick here. The like growing the size and scope of the town, and wasting 700,000 USD on concrete median with weeds. Which is a nice sweetheart deal for the largest family owned nursery in town.

I wouldn't stand a chance.

To the OP, glad you're finding a good go at it! We need more frugality in our public servants.

I love this story.

Way to use your financial independence to try and get involved and make a difference!
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

Awesome!

This is one of the many things I want to seriously look into as I reach FI, among other political activism.  It's nice to hear that it may actually work :-)

The results are in.

My city has a new mayor and 8 new city councillors. Most of the old guard ,who were borrowers and spenders, have been unceremoniously dumped!!!

Most of the new councillors are financially cautious mustachian types.

Mission accomplished, no more local tax rises!!!!!!

Don't get too relaxed... people say one thing, get power, then do another. Keep a good watch.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
