Hi all,
So one [stressing -- one] of the actions I've decided to take is bumping up charitable donations to groups working on this issue.
I have donated to Protect Our Winters, and also think 350.org is pretty good.
Any thoughts or suggestions?
Notes:
1. I live in a deeply-red place, so local and state groups are thin on the ground, though I'll keep looking.
2. Again...this is not necessarily the best or most effective, much less the only, step I can take. But it's one that I want to add to the quiver.

Climate change is a national issue, but if you wanted to support local organizations:
You may consider a conservation land trust, they exist all over the county http://findalandtrust.org/ and have appeal across party lines
You may also consider bicycle advocacy organizations which often exist on a state or local level, the bike coops (which are typically a bit punk rock or christian - odd mix) http://www.bikecollectives.org/wiki/index.php?title=Community_Bicycle_Organizations
I'm sure there have to be some alternative energy groups - at a minimum a lot of CAP agencies provide weatherization services to low income people - which saves energy and helps a poor person. http://www.communityactionpartnership.com/index.php?option=com_spreadsheets&view=search&spreadsheet=cap&Itemid=188e

+1 to all of this, especially the land trusts. Those exist across bipartisan lines and in every state from what I'm aware of.
If you are in south central (like Texas), rails-to-trails is a nice organization but I think for real change we have to start making cities be less automotive-necessary.

How about the Union of Concerned Scientists? http://www.ucsusa.org/?_ga=1.34176102.614080219.1478874492#.WCYskC0rJEY

Thanks, all, for these.
I feel so righteous: as it happens, I am the executive director of a rails-to-trails nonprofit, which is partnered with a respected land trust organization!

I highly recommend the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC). I increased my donation to them this month as well as a couple of local urban agriculture groups.
