I must be one of the only people who really like RTS games at this point.

What are some of the more recent games that are popular? I think the last I played was Age of Mythology.

I don't know of very many recent ones that are popular. That's my problem :(

A few I found on Wikipedia that seem well received (disclaimer, I haven't played any of these):
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anno_1800
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel_Division:_Normandy_44

I have friends that are hardcore gamers and they play a lot of Stellaris (4x, if that falls under your RTS umbrella?).

With the exception of the Total War games they are all described as Real Time Strategy. Maybe the definition has changed over time?

Microsoft released a trailer for their upcoming flight simulator...they haven't had a proper new one since 2006.

A lot of games now (such as Anno 1800) are more builder games with RTS components. And not as much dedicated RTS like the older games like Starcraft/World of Warcraft/etc, which were almost exclusively focused on RTS.

You consider World of Warcraft an RTS? I'm not sure I understand your definition at all...

Was bouncing around between games I already owned (so many free games between Xbox Live, Epic Store, other FTP, plus my existing library), but decided to give Just Cause 3 a go, with the 'everything' edition on sale for $9.

Ridiculous, as anticipated, but quite amusing.  Some slowdown during giant explosions on my old first-gen Xbox One.

Pondering purchasing Far Cry Primal or Ghost Recon Wildlands (probably just Primal) for $5.

Currently 40 hours into Assassin's Creed Origins and thoroughly enjoying it. I am waiting for the next sale on Odyssey, which I hear is even better. I really enjoy the stealth.

The most hours I have put into any game in the past several years is Divinity Original Sin II. It is just an incredibly well-written and thoroughly polished game. However, it is BRUTALLY difficult. I didn't even beat it. I saw what was expected of me for the final boss fight and I thought, meh, I've had enough.

If you have not played XCOM 2 to, that is also a masterpiece. And it is also HARD AS HELL.

Count me as another person that couldn't get into The Witcher III. I even beat the game, but I didn't love the journey. I think it was the battle system. I want more than just a sword (or two). Reading through this discussion has convinced me to start a new game on NG+ to see if I missed anything or if I rushed the story. I really WANT to love it.

I am a PC gamer and all the comments about the PS4 exclusive are killing me. Mainly, I badly want to play RDR2, GOW, and Bloodborne. Speaking of From Software, anyone see the teaser for Elden Ring? I am irrationally excited for this game, more so than for any game in recent memory.

I was thinking about posting this question in a new thread, but I am curious what everyone's thought is on Google Stadia. Would you be happy to stream games and only need a lower-end system? Will it be too laggy? For me, if this thing proves to not lag, not randomly disconnect, not generally suck, I will be all over it. I don't need to "own" my games. I am even thinking of taking Microsoft up on their new PC pass. $5/month. Some games you can stream, some you can download. But, damnit, I still have to figure out how to get my hands on the PS4 exclusives!

Great games discussion in here!

Personally, I'm not a huge fan of the idea, although I can understand its appeal.

Here's why it doesn't work for me:  As I get older, my interest in (and time for) games has waned a bit, and I find myself playing fewer games, but spending more time on them.  I originally paid $20 for Valve's Orange Box (including Team Fortress 2), and I got a few thousand hours of enjoyment out of it.  I paid $17 for Kerbal Space Program, and have spent over 2,000 hours in that one as well.  The story is similar for Starcraft 2.  I've spent less than $100 on games in the last 10+ years, so the idea of spending more than that in 7 months is repulsive for me.

The idea of paying yet another subscription is repulsive to me.  I would feel like I *have* to spend my time playing games in order to "make it worth it," rather than making a one-time payment for something specific I want, and then being able to enjoy it forever.  And I don't like the thought of losing access to a game when I let the subscription lapse.

I'm very much not a typical consumer, though, so take it for what it's worth.

I have a Nvidia Shield and it has a similar setup with GeForce Now. Functionally it works great as long as you are hard wired. I'm not sure I would keep it after if they shift to a month-to-month model as I don't have enough time or interest in regularly playing games.

Here's why it doesn't work for me:

But what about the cost of upgrading the system? It sounds like you are still working on an older catalogue, so you will be good for a while. But that will not always be the case. Eventually your current ps/pc/xbox will not be able to handle a game you want to play.

Recently my video card bricked. $300 for a replacement/upgrade. That could have been 30 MONTHS of a Stadia subscription (albeit making the dubious assumption that the price will not go up in that time).

The appeal to me is offloading the hardware duties to one of the biggest and most technically adept companies in the solar system. I also read that, if we take the long view, this business model has the potential to tear the roof off of gaming as we know it. I mean, I am not going buy a ray-tracing, bells and whistles, $2000 graphics card. What kind of graphics can Google afford? This will pave the way for the next generation of mind-bogglingly huge, lifelike, multiplayer games.

Hell, this might even put pressure on the powers-that-be to upgrade our shit internet in the US. Call me an optimist.

That's a fair point, and one I hadn't taken into consideration.  Of course, being frugal, I'm still gaming on a GTX950 :D

Got into the beta of WoW classic and it has absolutely destroyed my desire to play the current retail WoW.

I spent 24 hours just training various pets on a hunter.

Those. Were. The. Days.

I played a gnome mage, full Netherwind Regalia with Staff of the Shadow Flame, Arcane Power build with fire tilt. Some of the most memorable gaming moments of my life, 40-man dungeon raids, competing with the other squishies for highest DPS.

Dark Souls has taken up all my gaming time in the last couple of months. I`ve been creating different character builds, and now I`ve decided to go all in on one. I`ve fooled around with online play and all that, but the DS community has gone down drastically this year. So, I have built a character that so far is level 298 just for PVE. The level grinding has been crazy at 95 hours so far. My stats are:

Vitality = 50
Attunement = 19
Endurance = 99
Strength = 50
Dexterity = 50
Resistance = 11
Intelligence = 50
Faith = 51

All the stats of course are soft capped, but I am starting to go ahead and continue leveling them a little here and there for the small gains. The rings I just kind of mess around with depending on a boss fight or whatever. I love using the Qualaag Fury Sword and the spells.

Leveling up in DS is a mixed bag for me. It's so satisfying to get more and more powerful. But the satisfaction of the game comes from going toe to toe with a much more powerful enemy and winning with perfectly-timed dodges and parries. I guess this is a fundamental issue with all RPG's. The game has to get easier as you level up, but as it gets easier it may be less satisfying.  What is a game designer to do?

I`m really weird when it comes to level grinding. I really enjoy spending hours at a time doing it no matter what the game is. I think I`m about to pick up Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night. I watched some guys playing it on PS Live and I was thrilled with what I saw. It truly is an unofficial Castlevania: SOTN sequel. Walmart`s got it for $32 on the PS4 right now.

So, FWIW, because of all the good reviews on here for The Witcher 3, I went back to play it on ng+ and I am enjoying it MUCH more this time. I am paying closer attention to the story. In most games I treat the story as a nuisance. Can't do that with W3. HOWEVER - the combat still pisses me off regularly. If you could get a carbon copy of Dark Souls combat into W3, you might have the greatest game ever. I am hoping that is exactly what Elden Ring will be. Time will tell.

I somewhat feel the same way. The combat is much better playing on the harder difficulties because you are forced to mess around with the oils and other stat buffs, but then you run into the worst problem with the game: the loading times. When you die you will face that minute long loading screen. I was hoping owning the pc version would help this and it definitely does, but not enough for my tastes. This includes with all the awesome mods available. In spite of the problems ,it is still my favorite game of all time though. I would have never thought that any game would dethrone Chrono Trigger as my favorite.

I just beat it. Such a great game. It really hit the Metroidvania sweet spot. If there is an issue, it has to do with how easy the game is. You can become so overpowered halfway through that nothing can kill you unless you want to die. The story was surprisingly decent. I found out in the end credits that David Hayter did the voice for one of the main characters and narrator. Also, the voice actor who played Alucard in SOTN did a voice too. I could tell that last one very easily.

Currently playing Monster Hunter World. I am about 20 hours in. I was rather confused for about the first 10 hours. Now I am only mildly confused. I picked the easiest weapon set to try to dumb it down and I may use something more complicated as I get more accustomed to the game. I have been enjoying it more and more with each passing hour. The combat is akin to Dark Souls without being nearly as rage-inducing (Ornstein and Smough, may you burn in hell for eternity). On average, a monster will take me about 20 - 30 minutes to take down and the fights are totally absorbing. Hard to quit the game at the end of the night, just want to level and level and level.

Anyone care to make an argument for Celeste? I picked it up on sale and played it for an hour or two. The level design, art, and story were great. But it is another one of these ultra-difficult platformers where you have to have extremely accurate timing and the reflexes of an F1 driver. I couldn't get past a certain screen after about 25 tries and I just lost all interest in trying anymore. (The game has difficulty control but I would rather quit than cheat.)

Mm I tried this game. Couldn't get into it, really - currently playing Horizon Zero Dawn which is similar in a way, but a bit less... restrictive? More of an RPG.

A difficulty control isn't cheating, anymore than a swinging couple is cheating.  It isn't cheating if it isn't against the rules.
Lots and lots of games have difficulty settings, ranging from almost impossible to lose to almost impossible to win.  Even an experienced gamer needs some time to get used to a specific game's controls, and playing the exact same level over and over gets you better and better even once you are used to it.  We play a level of overcooked 2 DLC the first time and can't even reach one-star.  A few hours later and getting 3 doesn't feel like a challenge.
Difficulty settings give a game replay value.  Go through it on easy mode.  Play something else.  Come back, play it on normal mode, it'll be harder, but at least possible.  Then some day come back and play pro mode!

It is only ultra hard and precise for the optional levels. The main story (A-sides) should be pretty straightforward. Maybe you are doing the section wrong (there are mild puzzle elements) or are trying a B-side level? I recommend leaving the B-sides alone at least until you've beat the main story. That way it is more of an even difficulty ramp up.

Persona 5. OMG it is sooooo damn good. Only downside is the plot appeals to tweens basically. It makes me feely a little icky. I wish the material was more adult.

Just caught up reading this entire thread since I lost touch with it a couple years ago. Made me laugh that somebody in 2017 was excited because the FFVII Remake was coming out "before the end of the year." I believe it is scheduled for first quarter 2020 now, haha.

World of Warcraft Classic launches August 26 at 3pm.   I will be traveling back to 2004 and this time I am going to try and finish all of the end game raids.

Recently got a Switch and Breath of the Wild. Pretty sure this game alone will provide a couple hundred hours of gameplay.

It's got to be 2 player split screen. It's the only game SO will play and I might get hurt if I played without her.

I'm tempted but... I have children now. I just don't have time. I'd be wanting to be totally absorbed for the first week...

Yeah the joy of being FIRE'd.  My wife is going to play (she was a rogue in 2004 but we are going mage mage this time) and she is up for tube socking the whole first week!

I must be one of the only people who really like RTS games at this point.

What are some of the more recent games that are popular? I think the last I played was Age of Mythology.

I don't know of very many recent ones that are popular. That's my problem :(

Little delayed here, but WC3 is having a bit of a resurgence now that Blizzard announced Reforged (https://playwarcraft3.com).

Welp….I preordered Final Fantasy 8 Remastered. I have tried playing the game twice before and could never get into it. Maybe the remaster will motivate me.

I lost much of a summer home from college to that damn game. I got a little too into it.

I am 30 hours into Persona 5 and dare I say it is losing the luster? I feel like a creepy voyeur looking in on the lives of teens. I will put a few more hours into it but I am a little bored. Games are as hard for me to quit as a novel.

...plus I have Bloodborne and the Uncharted trilogy loaded up and beckoning me every time I log on. Oh and Assassin's Creed Odyssey. The temptation is brutal. Damn new and shiny things.
