If there is a movie thread on this website, I havent seen it.
You all need to stop whatever pointless thing you are doing and get to a theater to see Manchester by the Sea, with Casey Affleck and Michelle Williams. It is a deeply moving family drama that is beautifully acted and directed. As a film buff said on my local chat board, some of the scenes are like watching Japanses torture porn, they are so draining and realistic.
The other completely excellent film I saw last week is Moonlight, about a black kid growing up in a drug infested area of Miami. It is an all African-American cast with tour de force acting from eveyone and perfect direction in a minimalistic production.
Being old and all, DH and I got in for $5 each in the discount show in th.e afternoon. And is is at a really NICE theater in town, The Chase Cinemas, for anyone who knows St. Louis.
Manchester by the Sea sounds like something I would like. I really appreciate the nuances in scenes that dig into excruciatingly emotional moments. Also, I do like Casey Affleck in everything I've seen him (especially
The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford). Imo, he's much better than Ben.
I have a few in my queue that I'll be watching this week that might be interesting (
Anomalisa - directed and I believe written by Charlie Kaufman and
Straight Outta Compton). I tend to stay away from most blockbusters except for if they're from a director that I wouldn't mind watching (such as Michael Bay.. lol j/k).
Just thought I'd say pshhHH, paying for a movie?!? I'm buildin' my stache here; I wait until it's at the library and rent it there for free. However, don't get me wrong, I do understand the appeal of watching in theaters - I just have not gone in years.
Anyhow, thanks for the thread idea. I'll post in with thoughts and am already looking forward to the recommendations provided.
