MMM-type ideas for Copenhagen vacation?
« on: October 24, 2016, 01:56:44 PM »
Headed to vacation in Denmark for a week in November. Flight and hotel already booked, but other than that, I have uncharacteristically not planned my day to day yet. Will most likely stay in Copenhagen the whole time, as family and friends are meeting us there, but somewhat open to other ideas if they are amazing (Aero looked quaint and wonderful, for example).

I absolutely love Scandinavia, but it never seems to come cheap. This is my first trip since I've adopted the MMM interest/lifestyle. Any tips you have for Copenhagen or Denmark on the cheap in general are appreciated.

Thanks much!

Dansk-Jodish (Danish-Jewish) museum in the city is worth a visit.

For a cheap trip, I might take the subway out to Amager (an island that's part of the city) and check out all the new developments out there.  You can check out the pentecost forest (http://www.visitcopenhagen.com/copenhagen/pentecost-woods-amager-gdk559841) and all sorts of architecture (http://www.visitcopenhagen.com/copenhagen/culture/architectural-orestad).

As with all travel food and lodging are likely your biggest expenses, but especially in Scandinavia due to the high labor costs. Since hotel is already booked not much to do there. Do what you can to limit eating out. Get groceries and make breakfast in the hotel. Do you have a fridge/kitchen? That's a good investment in the hotel, or AirBnB to avoid expensive food. Or find a grocery, deli or 7-11 near the hotel where you can get simple, cheap (ish) breakfast or lunch. Do picnic lunch, rather than waterfront restaurant with drinks. We were 5 days in stockholm and just simple breakfast in a sit-down bakery cost a fortune.

At least in norway/sweden even public transit is not especially cheap. Walk or bike should be doable for most places and let you see a lot of the city.

Lund is lovely. If you cross the bridge to Sweden.
If you like opera the opera house Copenhagen have good productions at reasonable prices( I speak as a European no idea of prices in the USA)
You can eat cheaper at lunchtime than in the evening a lot of places have lunchtime specials.

I would go to Roskilde to see the museum and the longships. When I lived in Sweden, we used to eat Finn Crisp or Wasa Bread, or scorpor (like a dried piece of crust) with butter and cheese for breakfast...maybe some longfil or lattfil, which are yogurt-type products (but not exactly), or maybe some bullar, which is a catch-all term for pastries, sweet rolls, cookies you would have with coffee, etc. The big, cooked meal was usually lunch--maybe that is the meal you could eat at a restaurant. Supper was always smorgas (sorry, I'm not putting in the little circle on top of the "a")....Smorgas means sandwiches. Smorgasbord (bord is table), means you have an assortment of crisp and soft breads with cheeses, herring, etc., and just have open face sandwiches for supper, probably with beer or tea. I have not been in Scandinavia for years, but I would think it would be fun to experiment with different foods for a smorgasbord in your hotel room. And if it's still the same as it used to be, it will be a lot cheaper to eat fish (lots of herring, for sure) rather than meats, except possibly meatballs. (Kottbullar). (Sorry again for not putting dots and circles over the appropriate vowels.) I am using Swedish words here, but the languages are similar. I'm American, but people invariably thought I was Danish because I speak Swedish from the back of my throat (like Danes and Americans), and not from the front of my mouth like a Swede.

Thank you for all your ideas! They are terrific.

I've been to Stockholm & north of the arctic circle in Sweden, but it's my first time going to Denmark. We have a full week to spend there, so we might get bored, but we have visitors coming also, so time might just fly by. I'm looking forward to it, but a bit nervous since when I went on holiday in the past, I never cared about budget. Now that I have found MMM, I realize I am not made of money and can't spend like a millionaire. I have a few goals for the rest of the year, like completely paying down cc debt, so perhaps Denmark was not the best vacation spot to pick with that in mind. Woops. Will make the best of it now!

We'll be staying at an AirBnB, so I'll try to convince my boyfriend to skip brunch and make our breakfasts at the apartment (or to go for his favorite, brunch, but to skip restaurant dinners instead). Should definitely make a big difference if we aren't eating out three times a day. My mother will come to stay with us for a few nights, and she is an excellent cook, much better than I am. That might help sweeten the deal, hehe.

The museum and excursion options also sound great. I found a whole list of museums that are free on certain days of the week, a free walking tour, a cheap street food vendor hall, will probably check out their architecturally famous library, etc. Will walk/bike lots and generally try to keep prices low, so that we can splurge consciously on a few things here and there.

I'll post here with my experience once I return from my trip, in case anybody else needs some tips on Copenhagen.

Keep ideas coming for now if you have them! Really appreciate your insider's input so we're not paying loads to do tired tourist things.
