March Madness - Who will win the dance?
« on: March 17, 2016, 01:34:28 PM »
I didn't see any threads about this already so I figured I'd start one, could just be my search function misbehaving since it is St. Patrick's Day... ;-)

Anyway, March Madness is upon us. Who will win it all this year? Anyone pick a 1-16 upset happening for the first time ever, or anything equally crazy?

I'm going with Kansas to beat UVA in the final.

Big March Madness fan here.  I took tomorrow off as usual so I could enjoy a whole day of the action.  I don't follow NCAA basketball throughout the reg season, and the conf tourneys, I might catch 5 mins of a game here or there but that is it, so I do my bracket research right before the start of the Final Four tourney.  My brackets usually work out nicely.

I picked Oregon to win this year.  Also of note I have Indiana and Seton Hall to going to the final four....and I HATE Duke.  :)

Lifelong Carolina fan here, so I don't pretend to be objective! I never fill out brackets because they take all the fun out of it for me.

Kansas looks pretty great this year, and I think Carolina could have its hands full with Indiana in the Sweet 16.

Have you seen the start times for the next round? Duke plays at 10:55 pm ET on Thurs night, and Carolina's set for 10:40 pm on Friday. I thought the 9:40 game on Saturday night was late!

No kidding! I'd (ideally, doesn't always happen) be fast asleep by then!  I guess college students live on a different schedule, used to be 3AM was no big deal back then.

I was away for the weekend, saw that there had been some upsets and was worried that my bracket would be in shambles. Less bad than it might have been! Crazy weekend of games.

Now that VCU's out of it I guess I'm rooting for UVA.

Haha.  So I'm a Michigan State grad.  Back when you started this I would have say MSU all the way!  And then that awful game happened...so now I guess I need to pick someone else.  But really I'm still waiting to wake up from the nightmare that was our game last week and find out that actually we turned it around and kicked Middle Tennessee State to the curb.  So instead I'll pick Indiana b/c I'm a Big 10 person and I hate UNC.

I went so far as to buy tickets to the regional, thinking "if we make it, ticket prices will go through the roof".  Still going on the trip, but the Sweet 16 tickets are sold and elite 8 are for sale - more like museums and theater and whatnot.  Thinking I'll take some time to stop by the StubHub office and put them up for last minute - if they sell, great.  If not, we can go to the game I guess.

Yeah - my mustachian cred takes a hit with an impulse purchase like this, but this was the best MSU team since Mateen's, and I've never been to a tournament game.  Basically, I really, really wanted to go see them play in person, but couldn't put a trip together in time for the first round games.  Then MTSU plays out of their minds and we play more of an average game (we didn't play that badly - they just played that well - this was not like losing to Nebraska earlier in the year), and I don't even get to sweat it out on Sunday.

Kansas alum here (class of Danny Manning), and I picked them this year (again--hope springs eternal).

We're currently overseas, so we're four hours later--but I'll be up in the middle of the night streaming every 'Hawks game.

You think ET zone is bad?  Try Atlantic Time that we are on here on the East Coast of Canada, which is 1 hour ahead of ET. I would be up until 3 am watching if I didn't have the PVR.

I think someone who stayed up late watching the UNI/A&M game did the typing on that first schedule Google put out. They've now changed the Duke game to 9:55 Thurs and the Carolina game to 9:57 on Fri. So still late for you on the east coast of Canada, but an hour earlier than we'd feared!

haha!  I was in the Izzone as a student, and went to a Final Four game as a student (b/c basically all you have to do is get 4 people to split a hotel room and gas and you're golden).  While we didn't play horribly, we stopped rebounding on offense and continually fouled on defense.  Which is like the opposite of what we usually do...rebound really well on offense and hold off on fouling on defense.  But yes MTSU had a great game, hands down.  Oh well, it's still better than being a Penn State fan since they didn't even make the NIT.  I live in Penn State country, so this is my small comfort.

Do any of you guys have brackets?  I have 31/48 winners chosen correctly so far, which puts me tied for first in my little family competition.  Anyone doing significantly better?  Anyone call some of the big upsets?

I was fortunate that most of the upsets so far have been closed off after just one round, minimizing the damage. I'm at 81.5% correct as things stand, 4th in the office pool with the highest number of possible points remaining. Will be interesting to see how things play out.
