It's ... MAGPIE SEASON!
« on: October 07, 2014, 12:09:57 AM »
This right here is the reason you'll see Australian cyclists riding around with painted eyes and cable ties sticking out of the backs of their helmets.

Watch this, international friends, and count your lucky stars. Aussie mates, I apologise in advance for the tingles up and down your spines.

I've only ever had one at a time. Where do you live that you get multiples? That would be my idea of cycling hell!

Melbourne, Bendigo, Canberra. In each case they were attacking other people.

I've been swooped before. Got me hard, thought I got hit by a meteorite!

Bloody bastards, wish we had a hunting season.

Luckily the flock of maggies between home and the bus stop never swoop (so far!) but a couple of years ago I was attacked in my front yard by 2 adults, well outside of swooping season. Turns out their baby (well, bigger than mum and dad!) was hanging out in our yard and the parents were still being super protective. That was intimidating but luckily they all moved on after a day or so.

Great clip, get those cable ties on top your helmets peoples if you haven't already.

I can't believe there was such complaint about helmet laws in Australia . . . Seems like the birds were already enforcing mandatory use.  :P

Yeah, when you have a helmet on it's a "clunk" on the back of your head. I can't begin to imagine the pain and injury if you weren't wearing one.

They attack pedestrians as well, but they don't seem to make contact like they do with cyclists.

It is painful. I was recently undoing my rear numberplate cover and a magpie swooped me. I pulled my jacket over my head and he eventually went away.
