Ireland Travel Suggestions?
« on: June 20, 2018, 05:16:12 PM »
My husband and I are going to vacation in Ireland for about 10 days in August. Any advice from locals or others who have been there?

We are planning to stay a few days in Dublin, then a few in Galway and make day trips from both places to see various sites etc. Does that sounds sensible? I don't want to have to pack and move every night. Does that sound like a sensible plan? Is there a better venturing point than Galway.

We are in to art, ruins, scenery, people watching. Down for a long walk, but not super outdoorsy or sporty.

Any tips or suggestions appreciated.

I prefer smaller places, so I loved Doolin, Inisheer, and Northern Ireland.  But with 10 days, not sure you could do all/any of these.  Cliffs of Moher are great too.

Galway and Dublin were probably my least favorite but I don't really like cities.

August is the most expensive time to travel in Ireland, could be 3 or 4 times the cost of travelling off peak, Sept would be way cheaper and more availability. If you have to come in August and stay in Dublin/ cities, midweek is cheaper than weekends. And more rural places cheaper than cities (still commutable).
For scenery, Wicklow or the West coast - Wild Atlantic Way https://www.wildatlanticway.com/explore-the-route/map
Achill Island, etc

Kerry is fab but it's a long way down.

Ruins are pretty much everywhere :) Genuine castles that you can stay in are pretty cool e.g. Kinnity Castle (mind the ghost!). https://www.kinnittycastlehotel.com

Clonmacnoise is a smaller version of Glendalough so less queues. You can get there by boat from Athlone http://www.vikingtoursireland.ie lovely cruise down the Shannon or by road.

Dublin a big European multi-cultural city with busloads of tourists walking around with selfie sticks.  It's overcrowded, overpriced and lost a legitimate Irish flair decades ago.

I love Ireland in the fall.   Donegal is my favorite.   Northern Ireland is interesting too, I find Belfast much more interesting than Dublin.

Dingle and the Great Blasket Islands are worth the trip.
