Title: How old are you? (Poll)
Post by: TreeLeaf on May 24, 2023, 01:26:09 PM
In keeping with my theme of gathering random demographic data on forum users, I have created a new poll.

This poll has no purpose.

"no purpose" - except to remind me that 6 months ago I upgraded to a different first-digit on my age.

Didn't really feel like an upgrade at 40 . . . more like the warranty running out.  :P

I am so pleased that I finally qualified for Medicare. I have had a crazy run of healthcare expenses in the ten weeks since and I've only had to pay about $200 OOP. It's good to be old ;-)

Ok - Now I'm wondering if we actually have someone over 100 years old on the forum, or if someone was being funny in their response, lol.

Dragoncar is 1000 years old. Most of the rest of us died of dysentery on the Oregon trail.

I feel like early retirement should be relatively simple to arrange for a centenarian.

In your late 40's you get an invite to AARP; in Canada I suppose it's CARP.

Dang it, I'm in the 40-49 with all you old folks!

When I started with MMM and on the forums I was close to the 20-29, but still in the 30-39 range. Sigh.

Not without a time machine. Retiring when you're 102 is late retirement, they're all on the FIRL forums.

Well hello there fellow 40 - 49 year old!

It's surprising how many 100+ year olds are coming out of lurking on this thread

Last night, I went out with a friend to a trivia night I hadn't been to before. Fully 80% of the attendees appeared to be men around 60. They called my friend and I "you girls." It's been quite some time since I've been a girl... or one of the youngest people in a bar. But I guess young and old is relative.

I'm surprised by these results; I thought this forum skewed hard to Gen X.

I'm surprised by these results; I thought this forum skewed hard to Gen X.

At this point, it looks like close to half (and the biggest group) IS Gen X, if you use birth years of 65-80 (or roughly aged 41-59 right now). If you count early 60s birth years as Gen X, then it's over half of the poll. The next biggest is Millennials at a third; I'm in that group, smack in the middle of the Millennial range. And the remaining 20-25% are older/Boomers.

We somewhat older people (cough cough) tend not to respond to these.  Age is just a number, you are as young as you feel, why is that any of your business, and all that, eh?

Hmm, my cohort is under-represented, guess I'll add mine.

I think it would be more interesting if we had a multi variable poll.. I.e what is your age, what is your NW, do you think you have enough money?..

As one who is STILL worried about not having enough with a NW of around $4M.. I wonder am I the only one afraid of running out?

I didn't say my fear is logical..:)

Well, according to this (https://media.nmfn.com/tnetwork/lifespan/index.html (https://media.nmfn.com/tnetwork/lifespan/index.html)) lifespan calculator, I am worrying waaaaay too much about running out of money and not enough about dying. I wouldn't worry about it. It thinks I'm going to be 92 - I'd be the first in my family to make it to their 90s. My parents both have autoimmune disease (my mom has about six), my father has Alzheimer's, I was born with an immune deficiency, I have half a dozen orthopedic and neurological causes of chronic pain and about five different chronic diseases that it didn't ask about. I'm sure it's a highly accurate quiz :-)

Hmm, 95 (https://media.nmfn.com/tnetwork/lifespan/index.html).  My goal was 92, the age at which my maternal grandmother and my father died.  My great-uncle made it to 100.5, so maybe I should be planning for 95 after all.  Or 96, since Canadians live a bit longer than Americans.

I’m at 97. Darn…maybe I should OMY a few more years. And round up to 100 to be on the safe side, since I’m also Canadian.

Or I need to start drinking, smoking, and not wearing my seatbelt. “Recreational” drugs are illegal here, so that one’s out as I would rather not go to prison…or get the death sentence, which has happened to others detained on drug charges.

I got a 91 on the calculator.  Already 62, mom lived to 80, dad is almost 92.  Each of them had one parent who lived past 80.  So maybe it's somewhat accurate.  I'll get back to everyone in 29 years.

No you're not.   I'm having a similar problem as I try to gradually shift from living on employment income to investment income.

To add to the depression but, it might be a good idea to be more aggressive in doing ROTH conversions to minimise the "Widows tax trap".. This assumes you live in the US and have pretax savings.

Yeah, personally I'm not surprised. Considering even at 30, retirement was at best a passing consideration.. I.e something "old people" did.

In the early days of this forum the population seemed to be mostly under 40, overwhelmingly from US + Canada, and disproportionately from STEM (with a particularly high number of engineers and software developers).  Not unlike Pete when he was regularly posting on his blog.

The median age seems a lot older now, as many FIREd and left, or just left, or stuck around and got a decade older somehow.

We’ve attracted a number of “over 50 frequent posters” since, but far fewer 20 something’s.

The forum also attracts a tiny fraction of the posts it got five years ago. Forums in general aren’t as big a thing anymore, and seem like they may go the way of chat rooms of the 1990s

It’s not a robust conclusion - in fact it’s very shaky. However, I’d expect that almost everyone over, say 50, has FIREd, and is just here because they like the forum. The numbers look evenly distributed until then, and they’re evenly distributed afterwards too, but there are half as many. It peters out at over 70 - as the forum started a bit over 10 years ago, you wouldn’t expect many people who are now over 70 to have joined.

Of course, the fact that most of the people here whose age I roughly know is over 50 are already FIREd (except for the diehards in the $2-$4million thread) has nothing to do with it ;).

There is another poll I made here:

which had an option for 'I'm retired'. It seems like, based on the responses to that poll, a large majority of people here still have some sort of active source of income.

Of course one could argue that poll is not statistically significant though...

But this is the MMM forum where being "retired" often means you still might have some income from a job even if you don't need that income. Not me but, you know, the crazy people ;-).

I don't know how many people here in this poll are trying to get to FI and/or RE,  or are already FI and continue to be employed at a job verses how many are FI and have pulled the plug on any sort of income earning employment. Or their ages when they became FI and REd. But looking at your poll it seems like the majority of people here are in the 30 to 50 range which like the normal age range most people are interested in FIRE.

Well - these are all fair points. They also cause me to have more questions in my mind than answers...

Which then leads to more polls!!! Lol 🤣 😆

Lol 🤣 😆

Can we have a poll on how many more polls you will create?    ;-)

Since it's forward-looking, we could set up a betting pool.

I clicked my age and thought, 'hm, just squeaked into 40-49,' and then realized I'm not 40. I'm 41.

I am 26. I can see from the poll that there are multiple of us twenty-somethings!

As to our relative underrepresentation on the forums: it's because they're forums. The only other twenty-something I know in real life who uses a forum for anything is someone I met on the MMM forums, lol. The rest of the cohort is on other platforms: reddit, discord, etc.

I wonder if I will win the youngest Magical Moab attendee award?

EDIT: Didn't realize all my points were already made because I didn't realize there were two pages in the thread. Insert joke about youngins' not understanding old-timey tech here.

I voted as a 20 something but I have now moved on to the next cohort. Farewell.
