Thanks for the replies everyone.  Just as I suspected, prices are lower pretty much everywhere else, milk seems to be drastically lower in the US, but bread not so much.  Interesting.

I confirmed the 4 L of milk here goes for about $6.40, not much savings over the 2L at $3.35.

And we also have bags of milk available here on the East Coast as well.

4L of milk goes for 6.45$ here in Quebec, and that's the lowest price they're legally allowed to sell it (other brands go up to 7.80$ for the same quantity).

Bread... last I saw was about 3$/loaf at the grocery store, or 5$ at the bakery for a decent sourdough (or about 30 cents worth of ingredients if you buy in bulk and make your own, which I do for my family, even if I don't eat much wheat myself).

$6.40?! WOW, where do you shop? Are you in a small town?

I'm in one of the bigger cities in NB, and the price of milk is pretty consistent at all the grocery stores in that $3.30/2L range.  I frequently go to Sobeys, Superstore (Loblaws) and Co-op.

Had to post an update... I found a loaf of bread for only 1.88 each today!

Went to buy bread cubes for stuffing for Turkey and the money grubbing retailers ( raised price for thanksgiving) wanted $3.29.  For a smallish bag..,  so I bought 1.88 loaf, cut it up and it is drying now.

I will make bread from scratch for guests to eat, though.  As colitis said, I will save well over $1.50 per loaf, usually.  And the kids eat it more than store bought, saving on other grocery costs.

Eta. My goodness, Kitsune was spell corrected to colitis... My apologies for not catching that.

Small-town NC:

$2.98 for one loaf of whole grain Pepperidge Farm bread (yum!)

$2.70 for one gallon of whole milk (generic store brand)

Sydney, Australia.

$1 for homebrand white bread, but we pay more - $4-$5 - for a good grainy loaf.

$1 for 1L homebrand milk. We pay more - $2 for 1L - to support the state's dairy farmers. I drink lactose-free milk - $2 for 1L Liddels UHT.
