Help with education project by taking a short survey!
« on: March 14, 2014, 10:48:41 AM »
I'm taking a class in creativity and design thinking this semester and for our semester project my group is working on the issue of diversity in STEM majors and careers--how to get more students from different backgrounds interested in science, technology, engineering, and math. This isn't because we think everyone has to do these things, but more because we feel no one should feel like they can't, and the current demographically non-representative participation in these fields shows that there are still roadblocks for certain groups.  However, our ideas of what those roadblocks are could be biased or stereotyped, since we're mostly engineering graduate students. So we're reaching out to the public through Facebook and email and internet forums (:D) to get a wider perspective on the problem before we work on a "solution." (We won't actually solve it singlehanded.)

Notes/disclaimers: we're equally interested in the responses of people employed in STEM and those who are not. Maybe slightly more in those who are not, since that is the perspective we are less familiar with. The survey is informal and unofficial; it hasn't been vetted by an ethics committee or anything. I'm fairly certain it won't cause emotional breakdowns or anything. We don't plan to publish the results beyond class assignments. We just need a better idea of the perspectives and experiences out there before we move forward. Mustachians are a helpful and fairly diverse group, career-wise, so I figured some of you would be interested in helping out.
