Free videogames ideas
« on: May 18, 2015, 06:13:32 AM »
Hi all,

I know a lot of people may not think of video games as a very productive hobby but I'm a geek at heart (I'm a programmer for my day job) :) Wanted to share some free video games that I enjoy and would like to have some ideas :)

-Hearthstone from Blizzard (like a Magic card game), it's free to play online.
-Plants vs Zombies
-Bejeweled
-League of Legends (Haven't played myself but know of this one)

Thanks,
Andrea

Hey, I'll never understand why $9 a month for brain rotting TV from a streaming service is "Mustachian" entertainment but $5 for a game you can play for hundreds of hours isn't myself.  XD

Path of Exile is great and free.

DOS Emulators for abandonware.

I use CC rewards to buy Steam Cards, then use the Steam Cards on things that are drastically slashed.  I've actually stopped crediting my account, I've got so much credit I'm sitting on at the moment I can probably go through 2-3 Steam sales.

We had a thread like this a long time ago, if you're willing to pay even $1 Steam and GoG.com have all kinds of crazy options.  PC gaming is ridiculously cheap.  There's really very little need to lay out cash any more, you can play so much that's so good for so little.

OH, and the Humble Bundle.  You can even slide the donation to just the charity so technically you're not spending any money on games at all, you're just making a donation XD

If you're already shelling out for XBox Live Gold, they run free games every week. They're still doing it for XBox 360 too, and sometimes have pretty good games. Last month I got Gears of War: Judgement, Assassin's Creed 4, and Army of Two for free. Well, OK, Army of Two is a crappy game, but amusing enough to justify the $0 price tag. :)

They've got CastleStorm up for XBox One this week, which seems to be pretty good from the bit I've played.

For PC let's not forget Kongregate. While it may take some searching, there are quite a few well done games on there. Contract Wars is a highly detailed game if you're into First Person Shooters, there are quite a few puzzle games, at least one online Risk type game, and all sorts of things to make you chuckle. I remember playing a game where you were a penguin trying to fly!

Steam has numerous Free-to-Play games as well. I like Gear Up, it's a colorful little competitive multiplayer tank game.

The only downside I could see to PC gaming is that if you play more advanced games, the cost of a system required to run it might be more than other ways of playing. However, with the steep discounts at Humble, Steam, and GOG, and with all the free games that are out there, you could very rapidly recover the cost and come out ahead. Especially if you look around and find a good system being sold at a lower price.

I have used emulators in order to play NES and SNES games for free, though this may not be legal where you live.  I find that most "free" games on the app stores are only truly playable for free for a few days before the constant begging for money becomes unbearable. I would rather spend money on a full game from the beginning.

I second kongregate if you are playing on a real computer. The mobile site doesn't always work for me. There are ALOT of games on that site dating back years and years.

While not free, I've also scored a number of garage sale deals for games on older systems for just a couple bucks.

That is a vastly different definition of "nerdy" than what I'm familiar with. How can you have a list of "nerdy" computer games without Nethack and Dwarf Fortress being in the top two positions?!

I get ps3 and ps4 games from library.
Sometimes I buy games to support developers, for example, Bioware.

Thanks everyone for the tips! I will for sure look into them. Also wanted to mention minecraft. There is a small fee but I had tons of fun on it. My husband and I also think about building our own game someday. My husband has started his and I'm still in thinking phase. Back to research I guess!

ildar, I have also done that. It's a great resource for sure to look at the library!

I have been playing Rift from Trion Worlds lately. It's similar to WoW except that the whole content is free-to-play.

Check http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rift_%28video_game%29 for more info.

I recently downloaded the free community Half Life 2 update and I'm replaying it on Hard with everything maxed out. The textures are significantly improved and there are some subtle new lighting and particle effects and useful developer commentary but mainly it's a reminder of how fantastically tight the gameplay of HL2 was even compared to modern shooters.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
