Free rice
« on: September 19, 2013, 09:45:40 AM »
Hi all,

Check out www.freerice.com.

You can do quizzes on all sorts of subjects, like English, French, Spanish and German vocabulary, but also art, geography, science and math. With each correct answer, you donate 10 grains of rice to someone who needs it through the UN World Food Program. The rice is donated by sponsors mentioned on the site.

From the site:

"Here is how it works: when you play the game, sponsor banners appear on the bottom of your screen for every correct answer that you choose. The money generated by these banners is then used to buy the rice. So by playing, you generate the money that pays for the rice donated to hungry people.

Freerice does not make any money from this. Freerice is a website committed to the cause of ending hunger around the world. It is run entirely for free and at no profit. All money (100%) raised by the site goes to the UN World Food Programme to help feed the hungry. Sponsors make all payments to the WFP directly."

I really like how this works, because besides helping people, you get to learn new things (language learning is my favorite).

I've been having my students use FreeRice for about 5 years to work on their vocabulary skills, it's an awesome tool.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

Oh man, so cool! I didn't realize they did it in other languages. Silly me. Thanks for sharing!
