Free PC games
« on: January 24, 2014, 08:01:44 AM »
I love playing video games. Some have great single player stories, other have nice graphics, require tactics and some have great online opportunities. I spend several evenings a week chatting to friends online (both typing and voice) while playing video-games together. It's a big part of my social life. (Even though non-gamers think it's something antisocial. Yet when you ask them what they did in the evening, they watched tv for hours...)

Anyway the last few years there is a certain trend in the PC gaming industry. The games themselves are free and you can buy in-game purchases to enhance your experience. The reason is that people don't always want to put down 50€-60$ for a game they haven't tried (unless it's a sequel to a popular game) and with piracy they lose some income. When they make a game free to play, they have a much bigger audience. Also, spenders tend to spend more on a game with in-game purchases than a one-time fee and with the bigger audience they got, they get more revenue.

Largely there are three types of free games with in-game purchases.
- The worst ones are the ones called "pay-to-win". It basicly means that the only way to play this game on a normal level is to pay some money. Either you are stuck with basics or need to do the same thing over and over for 2 years to catch up with someone who pays 5$.
- Free to play but some grinding: This usually means that there is an in-game currency that you earn by playing and one you get with money. You can speed things up by spending real money, but if you like the game and put some hours in it, it's certainly doable for free as well and you hardly miss anything the payers do.
- The pay for cosmetics: These games don't give any (or hardly any) advantages if you pay with money. Instead money gives skins, cosmetic items, ... for your character so it looks different. Gameplay stays the same.

For frugal people this trend is a good thing. We can play more games for free :-) And if it's a really good game, I don't even mind sponsoring the company by buying something in-game but I got to admit it will be less than what spenders buy.

So, here is a list of a few games I play/played that I really enjoyed that were completely free and not pay2win. Feel free to add your own. There are also a lot of smaller games on facebook, websites, ... I'm not going to list them here, but perhaps we should add them later or make a different thread for that.

The games in no particular order:
"Grind" games:
- War thunder: Flying WW2 planes and trying to shoot other players down or bomb objectives. You start with small planes with small guns, slowly you get bigger planes with bigger guns. You are always matched against people with similar planes. Really fun game, great graphics. Has both arcade mode and more realistic modes.
- Lotro: rather big grind without spending at least a bit of money, but it's a MMORPG located in middle earth. Very friendly community as well.
- Planetside 2: Huge MMO shooter. You have 3 planets with the 3 factions on each. You try to capture parts and gain more ground that way. The game keeps continuing if you go to bed so when you log in again the territories might have changed sides a lot of times. Quite nice game although a bit overwhelming at first.
- Warframe: co-op shooter where you and friends/random teammates kill waves of alien-like creatures. Your character shoots with normal weapons, fights with a big blade and has some epic skills depening on the type (invisible, dash forward, freeze everyone, ...)
- Airmech: indie game on steam. Futuristic kinda tower defense game where you build tanks, units, ... to protect and push bases. Once you destroy the enemies main base you win.
- Heartstone: Blizzard's latest pc card game. It just went into open beta for the US and should be available for EU/asia soon as well. The top 100 players during closed beta were people who hadn't bought any cards with real money yet. It's based on the warcraft's lore but even without that you can easily play it. It plays a bit like magic the gathering, although less complicated.

Free games with cosmetics:
- Team fortress 2: very fun shooter on steam. Different game modes. Basicly you only pay real money for hats :D Different types of characters you can play: healing, building turrets, rocketeer, guy with heavy machine gun, spy, ...
- League of Legends: the most popular game at the moment. It's a moba game. Purpose is to destroy the enemy base. You do this by playing champions who aid the small waves of footfolk coming out of both bases. Warning: the community is rather toxic and full of complainypants. Fun game though. Real money is almost only used for cosmetic skins. You also gain points by playing games with which you unlock new champs.

Oldies for nostalgia that became free to play:
- Red Alert, tiberian sun, command and conquer -> legally free since a couple of years. If you are nostalgic to play them again
- (Age of Empires 2 Forgotten empire mod) -> the game itself still isn't free I think but if you have it lying around, the free mod makes it able to put unit limit to 1000, bigger screen resolution, new factions, ... Still fun to play with friends (over tunggle for example).

Dota 2: Great game, with less cartoony graphics than LoL.  Some learning curve, but they pair you against people of similar skill level.

I've trended towards Kongregate games a lot. Free to play, free to win (pay to win faster), and I don't end up losing sleep in a 14 hour overnight raid simply by design.

Yep! And the items I get from Dota 2, I sell to pay for other steam games.

I also enjoyed Warframe and TF2.

War Thunder is excellent.  Until recently when I cut back on my computer time to save electricity, I'd been playing it a lot.  Runs perfectly find on a 3ghz Pentium 4 that I put together back in 2003 (with a newer 2008 vintage graphics card though).

I was going to say "LoL and no mention of Dota 2?"

I love the TF2 holiday events plus the new Steam marketplace.  I sit there hitting F5, buying holiday crates whenever someone puts them on the market real cheap and reselling for $0.05-$0.10 profit.  Anywhere else this confession would probably be embarrassing.  ;)

Woah?  TF2 is free now?  I think I got it as part of the Orange box bundle for $40 8 years ago now.  Well worth the $.  Fantastic game (along with the others in the bundle).  I've never once changed a hat or item of clothing on any character.  It adds nothing to the experience, so I don't know why anyone would bother.  I'm a little annoyed that they are turning what was once a "pure" CTF/Control/Push/Objective based multiplayer game into this nonsense with hats, experience, special items, etc.  Futuremark sorta did the same thing with Shattered Horizon and it went from my 2nd or 3rd favorite game ever to near the bottom of my list pretty quickly.

In general I avoid any games with in-game purchases.  That shit is lame.

Other free games I love:

Quake Live (Quake 3)  You can now go Premium for access to more arenas/servers. http://www.quakelive.com/

Quake 1 - 3 engines are open source now I believe, so there are a bazillion versions of these games you can play.  Quake 1 Open Arena is the best deathmatch game in the world, and that is a fact.

Open Arena (Open Source Quake 3) http://www.openarena.ws

Zod Engine - Open source version of the original Bitmap Brothers game Z.  http://zod.sourceforge.net/

Alien Swarm - http://store.steampowered.com/app/630/

Wolfenstein 3d - free multiplayer

F.E.A.R. - free multiplayer

In general though, I just wait until a game has been out for a while then snap it up on a steam sale for like $5.

For console games, I game further behind the curve and get used or best-of collection games for ~$10, then sometimes resell them later.

I love TF2, though I haven't played much lately.  I don't mind the cosmetics at all.  In fact, they're rather useful.  It's helpful to know the spy with the fedora can sidestab so I shouldn't chase him, or the demo with the parrot knows what to do with an uber, or that I can't countersnipe the guy with the Sola Topi.  They can also be useful in psychological warfare if you're a good player.  I swear I am incapable of headshotting my friend when he's wearing his lime green spinechilling skull.  I lose all confidence and flub the shot.

When I first heard of Dota2 (more than a year ago) it still required an invite for the closed beta key. So I went with LoL instead back then. Didn't want to add games to the list I've never played and I was sure others were going to suggest it :)

Forgot to add alien swarm so thanks whoever added that. Sadly they haven't added new stories yet though which makes the replay value a bit too low after a few days. Fun game though.

Torchlight 1 was free for awhile on gog.com

To be honest, wait for the humblebundle deals.  For $1 you get some amazing stuff.

Oh yes, this is a good topic and the writeup of the different types of FTP games in the first post is excellent.

A lot of the good ones have been covered already but I'll add a few things:

Path of Exile - A niche game to be sure but if you loved Diablo 2 or other Roguelikes, you will probably love this free game from New Zealand based developer Grinding Gear Games.

The worst thing I can say about it is that it's slow to get started, but they are really filling this thing out and polishing it from its early closed beta days.  There are no in game ads, and there's really nothing you can buy that isn't a convenience feature (like more storage slots, you can always get free ones by creating "mules") or a cosmetic feature that does absolutely nothing other than make you look sparkly and show you supported the game.

It's one of those evergreen titles for me, I play it for a while, take a break, come back, and so on.

GOG.com (not one particular game but a site) - Sign up for an account here.  There's a few free classic games in their catalog, and every once in a while, they give away something for free.  I've had several free games from them by now.  DRM free, so check it out.

Minecraft - The Classic version of Minecraft is still widely played and free.  To be fair, I think the regular Minecraft at $27 US is actually a much better value (it's the only game that's ever taught me about capacitors and diodes!) but that's not free.

Star Wars The Old Republic - I played this for a while, it's a fun little story.  I think it lacks appeal once you finish that, and I think other games already mentioned in the thread are better, but hey, it's free.

Urban Dead - an older mostly text based browser game set in the fictional town of Malton in a zombie apocalpyse.  I love this game because it's so accessible to so many different people, and it's a true triumph of minimalism and harnessing the player's imagination.  One of the few zombie games that isn't a shooter, where it's just as important to be a scientist, a doctor, a mall rat, a parkour expert or a repairman as it is to be a soldier.  The brilliant part is, even when you "lose" you really just switch sides and the game continues (though you can opt to be a permanent zombie).

I mostly operate in the arena of "low cost" over "free" myself.  I admit I only buy one maybe two full priced AAA titles every couple of years, you can usually save most of the purchase price waiting a mere year or two for a lot of titles.  I mean I got Bioshock Infinite for less than $7 and it's not even been out that long.

Most of the money I actually spend is on alpha stage preorders or Kickstarters for boutique indie titles, honestly.  I spend less and less on mainstream games any more, they've just gotten too bland.  Oh boy another FPS sequel!  Oh boy another version of the same football game!

Also, Steam is insane.  It really is.

I've pretty much abandoned consoles in favor of the Glorious PC Master Race, but classic console gaming can be incredibly cheap.

The Humble Bundle is a favorite of mine, you get a lot of stuff and help out nonprofits for next to nothing.

A dedicated classic gamer who is PC or MAME based will generally pay nothing or very little however.  So much abandonware out there!

HUGE mame/retro gaming fan.  I love the simplicity of the older arcade games.

I hate playing them on a pc though, either full arcade cabinet or on the couch.

I tried to use hyperspin and HATED it... too much user config required.  Got myself an xbox1 (not xboxONE), modded it and dropped in Visionary3 and CoinOps5 (6 is out now) and it's a retro gamers dream come true.  Check it out if you haven't already.

as non-mmm as it is, gonna build myself a viewlix cabinet for the setup.  I guess it is sorta MMM... haha, considering a real viewlix cost $2000 + $1000 shipping :)

Are there any builds/whatever for them that allow to be run on a custom PC?  I'd love to build a cheap, lower power PC, shove it in a home-made cabinet, with some USB joysticks/buttons and have a sweet toy arcade setup.

Thanks for this thread.  I used to game a lot (LAN parties in High School with Counter Strike, Starcraft 1, War3 mods like Cube Defense and Sheep Tag, DOTA1, etc. were the best), but I haven't in years.  Don't even really have a computer that can anymore, just a laptop.  Fun thinking back.

I did go hang out at an old friend from middle school's house and use one of his spare PCs in 2011 and 2013 and we played a bunch of those old school games.  Also last summer we did LoL (we started with DOTA2 but it had this whole long mandatory tutorial that was unskippable, and LoL was faster to download than it was to go through that annoyance).

AirMech and Hearthstone both sound interesting though, I may see if I can get them to run..

I would also like to swing in a recommend dota2. Essentially all of the playable elements are available right out the gate, so your games is not hampered in anyway whatsoever from not spending money. Also, if you catch the bug for watching the professional level of play you will have an almost infinite amount of content that you can view. I expect that it is a little like being a soccer fan in that there are just so many games to watch that you could never run out if you tried. If you are interested in following the pro scene there is a really extensive and intuitive collections of VOD's here http://www.dotacinema.com/vods.

One of my friends is making a Zelda-like RPG called Lenna's Inception, with all of the levels procedurally generated. It won't be free when it's finished, but right now it's a fully functional alpha version. (I'm doing the music for it.)

Also, Mini Metro is a cute solitaire game obviously based on the London Underground.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
