Lake Mead, coming soon...

Wait, am I doing this wrong?
I'm sure it's designers never imagined a world where the water levels would drop so low.

I agree it's slightly off topic, but the ramifications are horrifying.

Back on track: Vivienne Westwood, 81. Never heard of her? Carrie Bradshaw's wedding dress. Never heard of Carrie Bradshaw or know anything about her wedding dress? Kudos.

I remember him playing with The Yardbirds, what a guitarist.  And then he went on to his own solo career.

He was a giant in the guitar world.  There aren't many people where you can immediately tell who it is after just a few notes . . . but Beck was one of those guys.

He had a cameo in Twins (Schwarzenegger and Divito ) in the bar dancing scene.
Just rewatched the movie, while looking at IMDB trivia on the movie and caught it.
Short on-screen time, but once you are actually listening, you can hear his distinctive style of guitar solo.

Bacon Number of 3 (via Schwarzenegger and Sharon Stone). Sabbath Number of 1 (Played on Ozzy's Patient number 9 album).

Unlikely to have an Erdös number, but I could be wrong.

For dead pools, aren't we supposed to make predictions as to who will die in the next year? At my old work place I believe the rules were:
1. Choose 10 people you think are going to die.
2. For every person you correctly predicted, you receive (85-person's age at death) points.
3. No points are awarded if you contribute to the person's death.
4. No points awarded for people in jail.
5. Player with most points at end of year wins.

Here's my list for 2023:

            (old politicians)
1. Trump
2. Biden
            (celebrities with problems)
3. Britney Spears
4. Shia LaBeouf
5. Lindsay Lohan
6. Val Kilmer
7. Gabriel Iglesias
            (a rapper)
8. Chief Keef
            (a supreme court justice)
9. Sotomayor
            (someone in a war zone)
10. Volodymyr Zelenskyy

Anyone else care to play along? As usual, 100 internet points will be awarded to the winner.

How many internet points does it take to enter?

To me the most interesting on your list is Sotomayor - curious why her?

As with most of the choices, it is a matter of balancing points awarded and likelihood of death. At 74, and spending some time in the hospital last year, Thomas is probably the most likely to die, but at 74 he's only worth 10 or 11 points. In second, at 72 Alito hasn't had any health scares recently. At 68, Sotomayor is worth 50% more points than Thomas, and she is a type 1 diabetic which usually cuts about 8 years off life expectancy. Of course, these are people who have some of the best healthcare in the world so there is going to be significant upward deviation from the average.

"You Know They Got a Hell of a Band:

"You Know They Got a Hell of a Band" is a 1992 horror short story by American writer Stephen King. It was first published January 1992.

I’ve not heard of that particular book, but now the song is stuck in my head!

Ira "Bob" Born, the man who built a business on the backs of the marshmallow monstrosities known as Peeps, had died. He was 98. Peeps manufacturer Just Born Quality Confections is a family business that was founded by Born's father and eventually taken over by his son Ross.

My Spouse loves Peeps, while I have no taste for a stale marshmallow coated with toxic-dye tainted sugar.

I followed the link and I could hear all the listed songs in my head - but I am part of the "shag carpet era" (ouch).  He was definitely an accomplished composer.

As a long-time L&O watcher, this made me unaccountably sad, even though I know he left the show a few years back. It's funny how we can low-key mourn someone we never met and didn't know, on account of the character he played.

I think his character was on more episodes in that series + related shows than any other.  I was also very sad when Jerry Orbach dies.

Belzer used to settlement $ from his lawsuit against Hogan et al to buy his house in France.

And from 3/14:

Dick Fosbury, a lanky American high jumper whose 1968 Olympic gold medal win showcased one of the most radical innovations in sports history — a technique dubbed the “Fosbury Flop” to arc backward over the bar and that forever changed the event, died March 12 at a nursing facility in Salt Lake City. He was 76.

I have done the Fosbury flop - it’s fun!

Born in Melbourne, Australia in 1934, Humphries created the character of housewife Edna Everage in 1955 as a social satire. The character became a huge hit in the 1970s when Humphries brought the act to London's West End and appeared in a host of productions, TV shows, and chat shows.

I remember seeing Dame Edna on US TV in the 80s or 90s and I laughed my fool head off.  That voice and always cheerful comments.  I can’t help but think that Robin Williams copied Dame Edna for “Mrs. Doubtfire”

I used to watch his show all of the time - as did a Chinese post-doc that worked in a neighboring lab (they reran the show late at night).  He would come in dumbfounded at the antics on the show.  One day he proclaimed there were no gay people in China!  Absolutely adamant. He wasn’t be judgmental about the US or about gay people - it was just pure shock.  I assured him there are gay people in China, but they likely don’t feel safe being “out”.  He remained unconvinced.  The discussions of the show with him are my favorite memories of that show.

This was circa 1995-1998-ish.  I did tire of the show.  Not sure a strong stomach was required as the topics weren’t the sort of thing that really bothers me (and many were fake).  I will say I barely made it through the first episode of “Black Mirror” and did not watch any further episodes.  But that is what - 25 years later and probably a sign of change of my tolerances on various topics.
