Class action law suit-Prescription dog food
« on: July 30, 2020, 01:51:06 PM »
Someone sent me this article on a class action law suit regarding Prescription Dog Food.

If you feed your dog any of the foods on the list, you can sign up.

I feed my two dogs Hills prescription dog foods so I signed up.

My question is, I am sure they are going to make me prove usage. how am I going to prove I have bought this stuff for maybe 4 years?

I  had been buying it from the vet for years till the covid virus hit and they didn't have it in stock. Now I buy it from Chewy. I don't have my receipts.

If they require proof of purchase, then there is a good chance that Chewy can provide your order manifest. I've been able to see my orders from 800PetMeds and Chewy for the entire time I've been a member (granted, only a year, but all of the orders are still there).

Any vet's office that treated your animals will also have records for purchases in your files most likely. You can probably call them and ask for a printout of the purchase orders.

But I've been in many class action lawsuits at this point and never had to prove my purchases even from years back. They may cap the amounts you can claim unless you have receipts for more, but you should be awarded some sort of settlement.

fuzzy math

Thanks!! My cat's Royal Canin diet is $70 per 17 lb bag. I think the lawsuit terms are a bit frivolous, my cat is on urinary food and 100% would die without it. Them labeling it as non different and providing little benefit is kind of silly. But I still struggle to understand why the goddamn food costs so much other than that they know I will pay it. I'd be sad if this somehow discouraged pet food companies from making the formulations that are necessary for life but at the same time by cat will probably be dead before this lawsuit would ever cause systemic change.

I have not saved receipts from 4 yrs ago when I shopped at Petsmart, and it appears that Chewy is not specifically listed (although I believe they are now owned by petsmart).

OP if you call them I'd be curious to hear what the lawyers tell you

I am not sure if this lawsuit will fly. I worked in food research and development and know how much money it takes to develop just one product. It takes close to a year to launch a product and prove it is going to last nutritionally and remain safe.

Plus, they are saying that it is a prescription dog food but has no drugs in it but requires a Vet's prescription. In one way I can see it being  prescription ONLY food due to the fact that it is specially formulated for certain health issues. Like one food is for kidney issues and I speculate that that food is lower in salt.

If it were not considered prescription, some animal owners might take it upon themselves to buy this food and give it to a dog that doesn't need it or not nutritionally sound for the animals needs.

To me the canned food all looks like crap and disgusting! I kind of feel sorry for my dogs feeding this food to them. I do wonder how they can charge so much for food that looks like brown mush.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
