chrome vs firefox
« on: September 04, 2019, 10:40:25 AM »
i've been a chrome user since nearly day 1. generally very happy with it. but, i heard this story on NPR a while ago and feel like i should switch to firefox for privacy/data reasons.
https://www.npr.org/2019/07/31/746878763/how-tech-companies-track-your-every-move-and-put-your-data-up-for-sale

i'm not someone that generally cares about privacy, but i am against the concept of data mining in general so i try not to support companies that do this (most of them?).

anyone else make the switch for similar reasons?

If you like Chrome more than Firefox (I personally prefer Firefox) but are turned off by the privacy concerns you may want to take a look at Iron. Iron is based on the Chromium source code but with a focus on privacy. One downside though is that it doesn't auto-update.

I switched to firefox for that reason. There will be some differences to get used to but overall I think I prefer it.

If you use Chromecast, you won't be able to cast from your browser. There may be some other compatibility issues, but nothing I'm aware of.

If you don't want your data mined, check your extensions. Some of them have easy access to nearly everything you do, even passwords/usernames can be at risk.

I actually just switched over last week.  I've used both in the past, but I had finally had enough.  I also like that firefox has some extensions that give your further control of your privacy.
