Is there such a thing?  What if I don't have a specific topic and I just want to blather back and forth with fellow members?  Can we be free of having a topic, and therefore be free of "thread-hijacking"?  The closest thing we have to a continuous, lively discussion is the Overheard at Work thread.  Hundreds of people are talking back and forth but even then people complain about being "off-topic".  Really?

Anyway, I have an aspiration to start a completely off-topic thread.  Here it be.  Polar bears, Higgs bosons, and Budapest.

It's the 7th snow day of the year and I might pull all my hair out.

FFS I don't care if it's cold, my children need to go to school!  For my mental health, not because I care if they learn anything.  That sounds kind of bad, but they don't need extra help academically, they really just need some structure and routine and I am sucking at providing that on these snow days.

I'll build off of this, b/c somewhat related: my 3.5 year old is driving me crazy.   I'm home a lot, my spouse, is home all day every day, and she is super high energy.   We absolutely have to get her into preschool for next year (although finding one is a whole nuther PITA), but I don't know how I'm going to make it until then.   Like your kids, she doesn't need the academics, and she does play on her own well for her age, but sheesh, I want some regular time with her out of the house!

Snow and snow days.
I did 12 winters in New Hampshire before moving to Florida. I do not miss snow. Not a single flake of it.

Misc.
I have no wine on my house. This makes me sad. My wife decided to go dry for Feb. I decided that I wouldn’t go dry but I would drink what we had in the house. I have. There will be a entry of zero in my alcohol budget for this month.
Still got whiskey, tequila, gin, beer and rum but no wine. Can’t wait til Sunday

There was a chat thread, though it died off long ago.  So here's to a fresh start!

I have had a cold for over a week, it is not playing nice and going away.  Advil and liquor combined are bad for the liver, so I have not had anything alcoholic for the duration of the cold. UnleashHell, your wife is doing this voluntarily, I am not.  My heavy consumption weeks might see 3 drinks overall, but none!?

I think this is turning into a general rant thread.

So, to be more positive, there are only 4 more days in February and then it will be March.  Right now it is -11C, forecast low tonight is -10C, the high for March 1 is predicted to be -4C!!!  We will ignore the fact that the high for Tuesday is back to -9C, and celebrate that there are no negative double-digit highs (i.e no -10s) predicted for the whole week.  We will also celebrate that the first week of March has no lows in the -20sC.   Spring is coming!!!!!!!

Its okay that it will probably start with small chat about the weather, then someone might say something deemed controversial/innacurate by someone else - and BOOM we'll be off about boxes and engagement rings and all sorts of things.

Last year I moved back to Illinois from California with my California born boyfriend.  Before we went I was like "winter's not soooo bad.  It will snow then melt, we'll have a few 50-60 degree days in Dec or Jan, and only about a week to 10 days of negative wind chills".

NOPE.  Cue worst winter in 30+ years.  I couldn't say "it's not always like this" enough.  I was hassling strangers to back me up so he didn't think I was lying before we left.

Anyway, we moved back to California a few months ago.  Phew.  It took me all of a week before I was "chilly" at 55, which was my go-to shorts temp when I was a kid.

Right now weather is a major topic around here, we are soo tired of winter.  In fact weather is always an acceptable topic - if you Google "Canadians and weather talk" you will get lots of hits.  It is a survival mechanism.

55F is 12C (I don't think in F anymore) - that is practically tropical.  Of course in August I would be covering every square inch, it would be so cold  ;-)

I will happily bitch about the weather to whoever wants to listen! :)

As a transplanted Southerner, this whole "wind chill" thing and "frozen pipes that burst" thing and "wintry mix" bullshit makes me want to stab something.

I did okay through January. I like a nice snow. But OH MY GOD the unrelenting COLD is making me CRAZY. And IRRITABLE.

Yes, my boyfriend came back to California very excited to tell everyone what "Freezing Rain" was. It's his go to story when people ask about what it was like to live there for a year.

We're having the little flurry that could today - the predicted dusting turned into a couple inches, and in this area, that's enough to stop all the things.  Last night on the news they blew this off in favor of talking about tomorrow's predicted snow, so I figure that will be a bust.

Then next week we'll be up in the 60's, which is good, 'cause we're flying out of here on Wednesday to Portland, which is having unseasonably warm and dry winter.  So far.

Soup's on the stove!

I was complaining to my friend on the east coast that I was cold  because it was 62 out. They hung up on me and I laughed when I saw the -14 they were dealing with. I love California

Some light winter precipitation is shutting down my university here in Atlanta. Not that I give a crap, considering I'm a PhD student who has completed all his classwork, and is only doing research now (and that research is theoretical, so I can do it at home).

It is amusing to see the excitement of my friends though.

I was on the receiving end of that conversation... So so cruel. My mother called me from Florida to complain it was so cold one morning, it was only 50 something. Meanwhile, it was 0 outside and about 58 inside my house because our new rental house has a 25 yo heat pump and is apparently built like a sieve.

I suppose it is karma, I did that to everyone I knew when I was down in FL myself. :-) So watch out! That might come back to haunt you one day.

Good plan. Except hurricane seasons have been quiet lately and I want revenge this year. Maybe mosquito season would work.

Retiredat63, weren't you supposed to be moving out to BC sometime soon?  You might want to speed that up; it's gorgeous here these days... ;)  (not to be mean or anything, but I'm in full-on gardening mode; peas planted, starts in the greenhouse, chickens laying up a storm.  I'm so excited!)

All y'all in the freezing cold should warm up your houses with some homemade bread.  I'm baking a loaf right now at 475 and it smells so damn good!

I've been making a seed and nut loaf instead: http://www.mynewroots.org/site/2013/02/the-life-changing-loaf-of-bread/ - so filling that I can't physically eat enough to gain weight :-P

I wish it was cold here (though maybe not as cold as some of you are describing...). It's humid and steamy instead. Which is fine, but I like cold and rain best of all.

Woot -- gonna try it!  Pretty sure I'll have to replace my bread knife within a day.  Any ideas for something in the middle?  Like a dense ... dunno what to call it or I'd just google it myself.  Just really dense healthy bread.

My bread knife has held up okay, it's probably not as dense as it looks (it helps if you chop the nuts finely - the seeds slice well without chopping).

I keep saying I am visiting this summer to scout - I wantwantwant to see your vegetable garden!!! I'll bring pictures of mine  ;-)   And Jon Snow's island. andandand....  And as I sadly keep saying, I can't sell this house until I am in the next calendar year after the matrimonial home sells - so that means 2016 at the earliest (Dear God, I hope it sells this summer).  I love this house and yard and neighborhood, and it was a haven, but owning a house is truly a millstone around the neck when you are ready to move on.

The only reason I don't have chickens (or any other animals than the dog) is that I like to take off every so often in the winter.  What do you do for chicken care when you travel?  Or do you just stay home? Since you obviously don't need to run away from winter.

Retiredat63, we did a fair bit of travelling in earlier years; for us the novelty and excitement are about really connecting with the land we live on.  A woodstove has transformed my relationship with winter, and I teach, so the winter is work time anyway.  But, we have a sailboat and love to get away.  Our chickens are pretty low maintenance most of the time; getting away overnight is no more issue than a cat, for instance.  For a longer trip, we have neighbours homesteading beside us that we trade farm-sitting duties with, and other friends have pinch-hit for us as the system is pretty simple.

My mother has a place in Mexico because she very much wants to escape Vancouver winters--the grey, the rain, the damp cold, the colds and flus that go around...so it's not all happiness and roses! :)  But i've really come to love being in one place year-round and learning its nuances through the seasons, so short escapes are keeping me pretty happy for now.

Good luck with your house sale!  And yes, come visit the garden in the summer if you're out scouting.  It will be much prettier then!
