A throwaway thread to be sure. Mine is Ben Affleck. It looks like he's a nice enough guy, I don't know of anything particularly stupid he's ever said or done, nor is he distinguishable by any trait that I normally despise. Indeed, if he were to ruin the Batman franchise I would actually feel indebted to him. Does anybody else have a celebrity they have the same feeling about?

Haha, I feel like a lot of people hate Ben Affleck. I like him! One thing that is hard for me to admit to people is that I really dislike Julia Roberts AND Tom Hanks. I know, it's so un-American!!! I just hate watching them in movies because they're TOO famous. I never feel like I can get into the story or really believe that they are their character. Instead I'm like, "Why is Tom Hanks speaking with an accent and living in an airport?" Also, I really hated Forrest Gump. So goddamn long, I thought it was going to be over like 8 times.

Carson Daly has the personality and charisma of a wet mop. Not even a dirty wet mop with some stories to tell, more like a damp mop. And yet he continues to be employed in front of cameras talking. It's not an objective reason, it's purely subjective.

I get that with some actors but it sort of makes the movie more interesting. Like, Dan in Real Life was awkward as hell but then I started thinking, "What if everyone is awkward because they don't want to freak out about the fact that Juliette Binoche is visiting them." I definitely would have enjoyed that airport one more if I had distracted myself with puzzling out what had happened to Hanks' career that led him to that situation. (And I agree, how is he leading man material? I've never understood it. But then I don't get Leonardo DiCaprio either. Not intended as a disparagement of their acting, there's just no charisma to me.)
You can also liven up movies by taking some famous character the actor has played, or some role you particularly identify them with, and assuming that backstory for their current character. For example, works great for any of the James Bonds.

Anyone with a toupee. I'm obsessed with wondering who has one and who doesn't. When I watch someone like Ben Affleck, I can't concentrate on the film because I'm watching his hairline All.The.Time. I also notice that a lot of scenes with him in it cut the top of his head off right where his "hairline" should be. I think they do this because it's too obviously fake.
If anyone knows of any celebs with hairpieces, please share. I seriously am obsessed and can't stop thinking about it.

I hate all celebs. I hate that our culture glorifies these people who make little to no productive contributions to society while ignoring the people who really help others. If they're actors, I'm not familiar with them because 95%+ of all movies/TV shows are mindless drivel. The same with music.
One of my favorite things is when my co-workers are going on about some apparently famous celebrity who had an unexpected (usually drug-related) death. I of course bring up that I've never heard of the individual, to exclamations of disbelief. I then mention it's a curious thing that we as a society extol these people who are drug addicts and commit suicide. :P

This is an amazing idea.
I would add Julia Roberts to the list, but I think that's just because I have a vague feeling that she's a terrible person. I also think Ben Affleck has zero charisma or acting talent. He always looks really bored, no matter what character he's playing and what film he's in.

I think part of my irrational dislike of her may be because when I was growing up a lot of my cousins and friends were into stupid movies like My Best Friend's Wedding. I was a PBS kid (like literally watched almost nothing but PBS... and read a lot of books) and I just didn't get it. Still seems like a dumb movie. Also I just have a really long list of movies I haven't seen (that people are SHOCKED when I say I haven't seen them). I'm on a slow project to check off the good/decent ones, but a lot of the ones I'm not really interested in are Julia Roberts movies (Pretty Woman... meh.)

I love movies... but I am not particularly fanatical about anyone in them or hateful. I do think reality show types are stupid. Kardashians comes to mind... anyone that stars in a show with 'wives' in probably sucks too.

It was a hard sell for my husband to convince me to watch True Detective because of Mr. Harrelson. I'm glad I did, but I still can't stand him.
I also can't stand Nicholas Cage and Laura Linney. We watch Masterpiece shows on PBS, but damn if that opening with Linney doesn't sometime ruin what follows.

I grew up in the same area as him and we occasionally played against each other in various soccer leagues. He is such a whiny little bitch. I second Drew Barrymore. I have no valid reason to dislike her, but I do all the same. I think it has something to do with the fact that I think she is vastly overrated on almost every level and where oh where is the justice in that. I have a long list of celebs I dislike for perfectly valid reasons, many have been covered already.

Adam Sandler gets a lot of good graces from me based on his early movies. But just watching the previews of "Jack and Jill" was like watching someone get their face cut open with a chain saw in slow motion. It made me want to physically assault him. I think if I'd actually seen it I would be stalking him with a .50 BMG Sniper Rifle.

For many years I felt that way about The Exalted One of Acting, Meryl Streep. I think that Linney gives off that same vibe. I was just bored by Streep and couldn't relate. Now I like her, though.

I feel they are ALL over paid and given way too much credit. I have no favorites, or non-favorites. I detest them all. They all depend on tax money for their professions to survive. That would be movies, tv shows, football, baseball and really any sport. The workers make millions yet they somehow couldn't do business without the tax subsidies.

Wow! I really did mean for this to be just a throwaway thread. What's so surprising is that I'm sure most of you all do whatever you can to avoid following the cult of celebrity.
Again Ben AFLAC is probably a great guy. I just can't stand his media persona. But I will defend the following celebrities.
– Tom Cruise. Obnoxious nutcase but a great actor.
– Nicholas Cage. How on earth would you know a movie is going to be a total waste of time and money if not for the presence of Nicholas Cage? He is THE litmus test for what will be a crap movie. As an added benefit for Mustachians, the reason he's in so many movies is because he overspent himself and went broke.
- Angelina Jolie. Before she decided she was going to look like a concentration camp survivor she was really hot. And she is an incredible actress in any case - though poorly you used or cast. But I could give a crap about her relationship and her children.
- Ann Hathaway. She's pretty, she wears her hair bobbed (which I find adorable), I thought her singing in Les Miserables was awesome. (But maybe I have a tin ear)
- Woody Harrelson. I like Woody. He is not afraid to take challenging roles. Even ones that definitely show he's losing his looks and his hair.
- Kim Kardashian. Just kidding. I got nothing.
I can definitely second almost all the other nominations with very objective reasons.

Good point. I have a really hard time thinking of a celebrity I really hate for NO reason whatsoever. Mine were mostly "reasons other people just don't get or agree with."

I felt that way about Robin Williams.
I'm not a big Carrey fan, but when you want "overdone" comedy, he's your man. His performance on the last episode of The Larry Sanders Show is all you ever need to see of Carrey, he was purely Carrey and really funny. But I don't need more of it.
I did enjoy his SNL parody last weekend of Shia's "Chandelier" music video. I had watched the original many times because I love the song and love Maddie, the young dancer. She's the central character on Dance Moms.

I happen to know Mandalay is a huge Pittsburgh fan, so I have to wonder how she feels about Big Ben, especially after his recent 12 TD, 0 INT, 0 sexual assaults performance the past few weeks!
As luck would have it my gut instinct had me trading off Russell Wilson for Ben on my freebie fantasy team. As a result I have been racking up wins like Ben racks up college girls in bar bathrooms. :D Combined with my money team's continued dominance it's been a good fantasy year for me.
And we enjoyed our trip to the 'burgh and watching the Steelers thump the Texans, although it never fails to amaze me that for a guy who's six-five Ben has such stubby legs. The hockey games were even more fun AND we got to go to the Pro Football Hall of Fame, which is a couple of hours away in Canton.

Well I was only skimming the thread so I don't know if this was mentioned, but I could never stand Philip Seymour Hoffman. There's over-rated, over-rated, and there's...did you actually watch movie?. I mean mission impossible 3, money ball, the master...okay that last one was bad anyway. I haven't seen all his movies. But what few I have he was really, really bad. In real life he had to shove his atheism in everybody's face as well. Okay I guess this is more actual reasoned response for disliking him.
No one mentioned Mike Meyers? Has he really faded from the public consciousness that quickly or is he just universally loved?

It's a horrible, horrible movie that my kids love to watch all the time. I feel sorry for him in this, but also get a newfound respect for his acting abilities. The fact that he didn't think he was too good to do this role, coupled with his decent acting despite the horrible script and direction, amazes me every time I see it. So, I used to think he was a douche until seeing him in this and being amazed that he doesn't seem like douche playing this role.

he does seem like a huge douchebag, but he's also jack donaghy ... and his puppet representation is hilarious in "team america" ... so i still have happy feelings about him.

I don't actually like Alec Baldwin either but I lightened it up a bit when I read an interview of him back when he was being "kicked out" of NYC. He had this long detailed rant about the city and he had been treated. He seemed amazingly just normal guy with normal concerns by which I mean this could have been a non-celebrity airing gripes in the same words. Just another New Yorker. I guess it's harder to dislike somebody once they seem human in some capacity. I don't know if I could find that article again. Seems like it somewhat corresponded to the end of 30 Rock, so a couple years ago.

I'm not surprised he got "kicked out" of NYC. This is, after all, the guy who caused quite a stir by refusing to put his phone away so that the commercial airliner he was on could proceed to take off. Apparently he thinks his words with friends game is more important than just following the rules so the plane can get off the ground and everyone else can make their connections.

I agree that PSH was hopelessly miscast in "Mission Impossible 3," but he was awesome in "Capote" and should have gotten at least an Oscar nomination for "Moneyball." He was also great in "Boogie Nights."
Mike Myers killed his career with "The Love Guru." That was an awful movie even by his standards (I liked "Wayne's World" but thought Austin Powers was incredibly stupid).

Funny, I really like most of the people that keep coming up.
I think Jay-Z and Beyonce are talented, I really do. But I can't stand how they're considered royalty. Or how they seem to bask in this sort of scrooge McDuck lifestyle. I don't know, it seems to be a hip hop thing. I don't get why you have to flaunt wealth and status symbols so much.
I also find Will Smith and his entire family annoying. Much like Oprah, they seem entirely too taken with themselves.
