Cape Breton Island welcomes Americans who oppose Trump
« on: February 18, 2016, 01:12:23 PM »
I thought this was a brilliant and hilarious marketing campaign by the Cape Breton tourist industry. They started it as a joke, but the response has been overwhelming.

Frankly, I've been thinking it doesn't matter who wins this election. Either way Canada is looking like a good option.

It's still a joke, sadly, until someone official makes it come with a visa.

I think the investor visa is only  $1M CDN - that's pretty much pocket change in US$ now

This is actually where I live and it wasn't started by tourism, it was a local radio DJ who set it up as a joke. Although, it is true that our population is shrinking and we do need some immigrants.

I love Cape Breton!
I have wonderful memories of time spent on Cape Breton Island, travelling on a show string budget, living in a tent.
I have been craving to go back, maybe living a bit more comfortably this time around.

This sounds like a great option no matter what happens, but especially if Trump becomes president

Wow, not a joke anymore! Cape Breton has taken this seriously and created a website to help US Americans immigrate.

I went there on my honeymoon, spectacularly gorgeous place!

How much will the U.S. Extract from you  as you leave? Gotta factor that in.

KAYAK had jumped on this bandwagon with free one-way tickets from US to Canada

They can't do anything to help you get into Canada though.  Even though CB would love the population influx, you still have to deal with immigration like normal.

I jokingly said something about wanting to figure out how to move to Canada.  Someone asked me "What makes you think they'd want you".  Quite honestly, not sure if they'd want me- but my husband has a better shot of getting accepted.  PhD in a desirable industry, and speaks English/French (also, Spanish, but that isn't so much of a Canada thing).  My office has joked that maybe we could just move the whole company to Canada... the CEO probably would agree to it if it weren't for all the tax implications.  :)

Of course, for all the Americans wanting to move to Canada or Australia, it really doesn't have any effect unless you are relinquishing your US citizenship, and most probably aren't going to do that.

Well if Trump is elected pres I'm moving to CB (or anywhere else on the planet). I know "Oh Canada" by heart so I'm a shoe in ;).

I said the same thing during our last federal elections. If Stephen Harper is re-elected, I'm moving. Anywhere. Even the USA seemed attractive at the time.

Seriously, for the sake of the world, you all need to stay in America, join a militia, exercise your 4th Amendment rights, and overthrow the authoritarian/totalitarian regime that future President-for-Life Kim Jon Drumpf will institute.

OK, so I'm kidding (a bit). Besides, Canada really doesn't make it easy for Americans to immigrate here, and, to hear my (now) American relatives talk about the problems they have getting immigration status for their adult Canadian kids, your government returns that favour. With interest.

I thought everyone who will leave if Ms. Clinton wins already swore they would leave if Mr Obama won

I think they realized everywhere else was already a godless liberal hell-hole and decided to stay in our quasi-godless liberal hell-hole.  Now Trump can fix it! See, everything works out in the end.

I am surprised americans are actually thinking about moving here, I know americans don't like being heavily taxed and having alot of regulations and by coming here, well that's what we have here. I mean our policies and regulations are a little bit like Bernie Sanders's type of policies.

I haven't heard anyone say they'd move to Canada if Bernie wins, though.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
