Travel tips, Amsterdam Schiphol
« on: August 08, 2015, 08:53:32 AM »
I don't know if there's a good place for this other than off topic, but after last years travels, I have a few tips regarding Amsterdam Schiphol airport.  It's one of the big airports in Europe, so flying from Asia or the US it's a decent chance you get to spend some time there in transit.

First of all, due to the EU rules, the airport is divided into three parts:  "Outside security" where, "inside security Schengen" and "inside security Rest of World".  There are passport controls between these three zones, and you're really only supposed to pass into where you should go...  Schengen means "most EU countries, and then some".  The EU exception is the UK, and the non-EU additions are countries like Norway and Iceland.

Then the tips:

If you have a few hours to kill, and you have a passport and/or visa that allows you to enter Netherlands - why not go to downtown Amsterdam?  The commuter train station is located beneath the arrival hall and will take you downtown in 20 minutes.  Just remember to go back in time to clear security for your next flight.

If you are on the Schengen side and just want a break, go upstairs close to Pier D and you'll find the "indoor / outdoor park" - indoors they've tried to create an outdoors feeling with plastic trees etc.  The real killer feature is that you can actually go outside on a deck / balcony and get some sunshine and fresh air.  This means more than one would think for a jetlagged traveller!  :)

When I eat on the Schengen side it's either at the Grand Cafe, a big white publike resturant, or at the little steak place right next to the Burger King in the upstairs food court.

On the rest of world side, a new resturant have opened called "Tastes from the Lowlands".  It's not the cheapest, but I do think it's the best.  Real food, prepared in an open kitchen so you can see the chefs work.

That's just my tips.  Please feel free to add on.

Very good tips. I recently departed from Schiphol and was a little bit confused by the divided "inside security" zones as you described. In fact, I'm still a little confused because I was flying out to Iceland so I presume I was in the EU/Schengen departures area (near Lounge 1 and Gates C), but looking at the airport map it still looks like there is a passport control checkpoint between there and Pier D where you said the indoor/outdoor park is located. (Is that what they call the "panorama terrace"?) My guidebook also mentioned a small branch of the Rijksmuseum but apparently that's currently closed while the airport undergoes some renovations.

I did enjoy lunch in the Lounge 1 upstairs food court. There were some nice panoramic windows there where I could sit and watch planes as well, just not outdoors. :-)

The outdoor park is more or less on top of the passport control line to get you out of Schengen.   Yes, going to Iceland, you'd be in the Schengen area.

At the moment, parts of the airport is a big construction site, yes.  :(

I was surprised to find that post-security there's a branch of the library! What a great idea. They have a good selection of what I guess you'd call smart-people coffee table books, about things like local architecture and design.

Does anyone know if the airport library branch has things like museum passes that visitors can use or just books?

For public transit connections from the airport, and specifically buses, is credit card accepted or is cash needed? For example, if I don't have a prepaid ticket or pass and need to pay on the bus.

And lastly, are public restrooms free to use or do you have to pay like some other neighboring countries? I'm guessing the airport restrooms would be free, but when you get out in the country like a rest area or gas station. Thanks!

I think it's just books, and I'm not sure if they circulate or if they're just for on-site reading. Maybe somebody who lives there will know?

wrt the other stuff, I know nothing. You can pay for the train with a credit card... at least with a Canadian one (with the right chip).

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
