Interested in becoming a moderator?
« on: June 11, 2015, 07:59:29 PM »
As before (man how time flies, two years?), we are looking for new mods.

I can't say the pay is good. (There is none.)  Or that you'll always love it (You won't; you get complained to, a lot).  But it is nice to help contribute to such a great community, and try to keep it great.

We are looking for people who've been here awhile and understand the type of moderation we prefer--a light hand, and editing (and preserving, using strikeout, rather than wholehandedly deleting), and allowing pretty much all content/ideas, just not personal attacks/rudeness.

To re-post an answer to an earlier question about the time commitment:
What kind of time commitment are we talking about here?

Whatever time you are already spending here, do that.

Don't spend more time on the internets instead of doing other productive stuff than you would otherwise.  :)

If you would like to be considered for a moderator position, please post in this thread or PM me.

Thanks!

Ooh pick me pick me!!

We were planning to fire (not FIRE) you, and who could take your place except...you!

I am extremely grateful for the willingness of others to perform the public service of acting as a moderator, especially because I am not willing to do it myself.  I'm too lazy, too daunted by the prospect of dealing with the petty squabbles that are bound to arise between anonymous internet-goers, and, mostly, put off by the possibility that wearing a moderator hat may influence my unrestrained willingness to freely post in my non-moderator capacity.  So, a huge THANK YOU to everyone who has stepped up or is willing to step up to perform the vital moderator function on behalf of the rest of us freeloaders.

I think the fact that people are willing to devote their unpaid time to the task of moderating is itself counterevidence (on a microcosmic level) of the notion that most members of this community harbor aspirations of wanton idleness (which has recently become a recurring theme of a certain lovably inflammatory poster-scientist who shall remain nameless :) ), notwithstanding my own specific expression of aspirations of wanton idleness in the previous paragraph.

Would do it on a time limited basis if you need someone.  Would also refrain from posting during that time period so as to avoid any perception of conflict.   (except for mundane how to questions).   I've really said all that I have to say on most matters anyhow.

Would I be able to use my powers of moderation for evil?

No.  Well, not usually.  You get one free day a year of "mod whatever the * you want."

Fascinating! This leads me to wonder what would happen if someone retroactively banned all the administrators using their first post. Would the repercussions cause a tear in the fabric of space-time?

Sometimes I think I'd like to be a mod, just to see what goes on behind the curtains. It would be fun to strategize with other mods about the future direction of the forum and stuff like that. I want in on the secret forums, I want to know the secret handshake.

But then I think of all the crap mods must have to put up with...

Well, now you've ensured that it will not escape the notice of everyone else.  What a waste of cunning circumlocution.

I am interested - especially if it is possible to get the occasional consult from other mods on any complicated issues. (Or do you just ignore the reports you aren't sure if/how to act?)
