Biking and Burping? How to stop?!
« on: September 24, 2013, 12:00:34 PM »
In a nutshell, I have been biking to and from work and it must be that I am guilping lots of air, because I find I can’t stop burping! It’s not noticeable to others but it is very annoying and slightly uncomfortable for me.

Has anyone else had this problem? I have tried breathing more from my nose to see if that would help... but no luck. I enjoy biking to work and I’m pretty sure this is the cause, but if anyone has any ideas or suggestions I would be very interested! Feel free to make jokes because this is kind of hilarious... but keep in mind that this has been going on for two weeks and it is no fun :(

maybe not the bike ride itself, it might be the smog/car exhaust that you breath in while riding bike, if you are riding alongside them. I'm not 100% sure about the reliability of this though, only heard it on radio a while back

maybe wear a mask like in asian countries? I don't know how effective that would be though in filtering the air, and it would hamper your air intake as well. Or try another route with less cars?

do you notice this when you always ride? Even in places with no cars?

Uh . . . you should not be gulping air.  You really want to pull deep breaths of air all the way down into the bottom of your tummy (your belly button should push out with each deep breath).  Are you eating or drinking anything immediately before your rides that could be causing the gas?

It might not be the biking, but in trying to figure out what is causing this I can't come to any other conclusion. I used to bike 3-6 times a week, with no problems. Now I'm biking about 12 times a week (counting trips to and from work separately). I also noticed I was biking faster than normal, and thought that that might be the culprit.

I've tried biking slower, to no avail.

My diet hasn't changed (that I can think of).

Sometimes I'm biking near heavy traffic, but the burping wasn't a problem in the past on the same route but less often. Hmm.

I tried eating lots of yogurt in case I needed more good bacteria in my stomach. Didn't help.

If there are more ideas, keep em coming! :) I think I've lost weight from biking, but it's hard to notice with the buildup of air in my stomach... Haha oh man.

I don't see a correlation.

aerophagia...it's something you just have to be aware of and try to swallow less...one trick is to spit if you have too much saliva...another trick is fill your stomach with as much water as you can tolerate comfortable before your ride...happy burping!

Mr. Macinstache - there might not be. But I've wracked my brain and can't think of any other cause :(

Aerophagia - would it be weird to develop that suddenly?

you mentioned you increased how often you ride and it wouldn't necessarily be abnormal to develop it when you never had it before. the only other way is if your stomach was making more gas but that only could be attributed to a change in your diet...mabye mixing acidic foods with basic foods, unlikely.

I moved to a new place and when I moved there I thought the water tasted funny. New theory is that the water is full of air or something that is making me burp. Bizarre!

Maybe it's just the increased intensity of the exercise affecting how your stomach and intestines function? I get more gassy when I start exercising if I haven't in a while...maybe kicking up duration/intensity does the same?

galliver - interesting theory! I am loathe to become sedentary to minimize the air in my stomach... but we'll see how desperate I get!

maybe try doing some deep breathing exercises once a day? Slowly take in as deep and full of a breath as you can... it should feel like you're stretching, in a way... hold it... then push it out slowly and deliberately. Repeat. Then try and think about it while you're riding every so often.

I used to do this when I was racing a lot. I don't know if it'll help with the burps, but it does change the way you breathe after a few weeks.

I forgot an important part: when this happens to me, it usually passes once I get accustomed to the new routine! (So no need to become more sedentary, maybe just wait it out for a while?)

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
