Best pedometer that isn't a watch?
« on: April 02, 2023, 11:37:26 PM »
I already have the time on my cell phone. Not interested in a watch -- I find them annoying to charge, make wrist clammy, cause tan lines, more things to break, sometimes uncomfortable, get in the way, and also potentially dangerous if something gets caught in the loop.

But I am interested in tracking my steps each day.

What is the best pedometer that isn't worn on my wrist?   Perhaps one that snaps onto a belt loop?  I can go around walking with that attached to my pants all I day I figure.  Do they work as well as the watch variants?

Just wondering if anyone else has had a similar line thought and what did you do about it?

One of the most accurate pedometers are the Yamax mechanical ones that you clip to your belt. They also have no form of data harvesting, just a straight pedometer. If you want to do analysis then you need to note the data elsewhere.

If you want something a bit more connected to an app or an account for data analysis, I used to get a fitbit zip (later rebranded as the inspire) and either use the clip accessory to attach it or just take the tracker out and put it in a pocket.

In terms of capability, either option is better at tracking actual steps accurately, not hand-gestures.

Third option is to use whatever inbuilt step-counter is in your phone, but that does mean you need to carry your phone around...and also data harvesting.

I use a Fitbit Inspire with a clip, and I clip it to my pocket.  I only have to charge it about once a week, so that isn't really burdensome.  I never liked wearing one on my wrist.  The clips don't last forever, but I can buy cheap knockoff clips from eBay that seem to be of comparable quality, so that's what I do.

My iphone is a pedometer.  No watch required.  In fact, I tried the newest iwatch for a couple months and found it quite annoying.  Unless you are a hard-core runner who can't carry a phone with you, no need for the iwatch since you always have phone with you.

There's also the oura ring...I am debating getting one when my fitbit finally dies, but I haven't tried it out yet.

Yeah, I just use the phone now too. I only need a rough idea of how active I've been so I don't care about the minimal steps I miss out on by not having it on me while puttering around my apartment. If I do something active without it (tennis, swimming, etc) I just mentally lower my target for the day.

I also just use my phone since I'm not exactly specific about numbers (or training for anything).
