Best Netflix Shows/Movies
« on: August 13, 2013, 09:29:01 PM »
I know lots of folks on this board maintain a Netflix membership because it is significantly cheaper than cable/dish.  I was hoping we could get a list of favorite shows/movies to alert other people to hidden gems - especially when planning a movie/tv night in.  Here are some picks off the top of my head.

Netflix Original Series
Orange is the New Black - really fantastic - from the writer of Weeds, womens' prison drama
House of Cards - very good - can't go wrong with Kevin Spacey, Robin Wright, political drama

British TV Series
Luther - all I have to say is Idris Elba - yummy!, detective drama
Top of the Lake - Jane Campion & Holly Hunter and Peggy from Mad Men in New Zealand - mystery with beautiful scenery

Other Notables
Sons of Anarchy - biker gang
New Girl - comedy
Mad Men
Haywire /b] - decent Steven Soderbergh movie

I liked this one too.  Definitely entertaining.

I've been watching The Office reruns lately.  That 70s Show is also fun.  Both on streaming.
I also really like Suits (it's a lawyer show, but the majority of it involves law office drama/comedy, not actual law so not dry and better than most other lawyer shows IMO), but I think it's disc only so far.

If there's one thing I've learned from reading the  "Favorite TV shows" and "listening to right now" threads, it's that a shared interest in frugality does not imply shared tastes in popular culture.  That said, I'll second OITNB and Arrested Development, and add Louie, Archer, and Freaks and Geeks to the list.  For a documentary with some interesting mustachian implications, you've got to check out Queen of Versailles.

I was just going to recommend that one!  Really interesting.

Our frequent Netflix fliers are:

Dr. Who
Top Gear (UK version only!)
Alias
New Girl
30 Rock
Antiques Roadshow
Downton Abbey

And we'll have to check out Top of the Lake- sounds right up our alley!

2 series my husband and I watched together and both enjoyed:
Doc Martin
Merlin

If you are okay with reading subtitles, I'd also suggest checking out a few K-dramas.  My two favorites are Secret Garden (funny & sweet) and Spring Waltz (sad at times but beautiful).  (warning about these: I am a hopeless romantic so I love them.  If you aren't, you may not.)

All of the ones in my first entry were t.v. shows.

For a K-drama movie, I loved A Moment to Remember.  We watched it last weekend on our date night.

Last I checked, Venture Brothers Season 1 was on Netflix.  My favorite show ever.

Archer is great
Bob's burgers is great, although some/all of it got taken down from Netflix?

Just watched Jiro Dreams of Sushi.  Great documentary about three Michelin star chef Jiro and his sons and his passion for making sushi.  Highly recommended.  I really wanted some sushi afterwards.

Also loved Freaks and Geeks forgot about that one.  I need to finish Downton Abbey.

We don't have the netflix with rentals - only the streaming so it does limit some options.

I might have misworded what I meant when I said "check out".  I meant "look into" or "try out".  We only have streaming as well. :)

I've been watching a Canadian show on Netflix called "Lost Girl" which is is pretty well-done for being low-budget.  It's a nice show to watch if you enjoy "supernatural" type crime dramas with a dash of comedy.  (Probably shouldn't watch it with kids in the room, though, because some of the themes/language can be pretty adult.)

I was going to add the BBC documentary Seven Up! and all of its following (the subjects are interviewed every 7 years from the age of seven until fifty-six).  It looks like the documentary series is no longer available on Netflix.  Bummer!  I'm guessing you could find them at the local library,.  It's fascinating to follow these people's lives.

I watch A LOT of documentaries - I can't remember all my top, but here are a few good ones.

I have Netflix, but long before I had Netflix I used YouTube, Documentary Storm and Top Documentaries, for 1000's of documentaries.

Here are some off the top of my head...

King Corn - Economics/environmentals/cultural aspects of corn / the typical American diet

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvMxIEgbsIo&feature=mv_sr

Dogs Decoded

http://documentarystorm.com/dogs-decoded/

How to Build a Human Heart - advancements in regenerative medicine

http://documentarystorm.com/how-to-build-a-human-heart/

Jonestown: Life and Death of The People's Temple - a very moving account to the Jonestown tragedy. It happened before I was born so I wanted to know more about these events, and this doc has many interviews from people that survived, and has audio/video of Jonestown which makes it very eerie.

Seen most of these + the entire 7up series.  The difference between 14 up, 21 up and 28 up were the most dramatic.  After that, not so much.

Try Lillyhammer.  I wouldn't watch Orange is the New Black with my mother (can you imagine the discomfort during the graphic lesbian scenes?) but I would watch Lilyhammer with her.

If they have Deadwood streaming it a must see.

Luther is also a very good show that is probably not known on here.

TV Shows
If you enjoy Freaks and Geeks (and seriously, who doesn't?), you'll probably like Undeclared (you also probably already know about it).
+1 Firefly (and Serenity) - makes me wish Cowboy Bebop was on Netflix.
I've always been into cop shows. Lately, I've binged on Copper (Five Points NY), Longmire (Wyoming), and Luther (London). Luther is probably the best of them. I wish Southland was available on streaming.
Hell on Wheels is interesting so far.
If you want to laugh and you're feeling weird, check out Wilfred.

Films
Beverly Hills Cop - classic Eddie Murphy. Did fellow SNL-alum Chris Farley pretty much recycle this with Beverly Hills Ninja? No complaints, just surprised it took me so long to notice.
The Cider House Rules - WARNING THIS WAS SAD

Just found a great show on accident, it's called Long Way Round and it's a travel TV series/documentary where Ewan MacGregor and Charley Boorman go around the world on motorcycles.  There's a lot of swearing in it, so not for kids.  But it was a great watch.  I'm in the middle of the sequel to that one, it's called Long Way Down.  They ride from the northern tip of Scotland down to Cape Town.

I was always a fan of Ewan MacGregor but even moreso after watching this.  They have a really tough time, it's not Hollywood.  And Charley Boorman is hilarious.

I loved Long Way Round, just noticed that they added it to Netflix and was thinking of a rewatch.

If you like standup comedy at all, Mike Birbiglia has a new one out that is just fantastic.  Really more like a one man theatrical show, he tells all these different stories and then keeps coming back to the story of how he met his wife.  His personality is kind of obnoxious at first but stick with it.

Great documentary for music lovers is Charles Bradley: Soul of America

A really great DIY show for self-sufficiency is:

The Colony  (Discovery channel); 10 people manage to build all you need to live life in less then 16 weeks.

Star Trek: TNG
Dr. Who
Limitless (great movie at focusing on what you can achieve after financial independence if you substitute the "drug" for willpower)
Jet Lee's Fearless.

Agreed. More generally, it was just good near-future sci-fi with a nice exploration of humanity, like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind or District 9. The science in the sci-fi wasn't used for "oh cool phasers and FTL travel", it was used to explore our society. ATMO, that's when the genre is at its best.

I just got done watching the miniseries "Neverland."  It's the backstory of Peter Pan and Captain Hook, and how they got to Neverland.  It's kind of dark and not really a kids sort of show.  I LOVED IT.  Recommend for anyone who likes gorgeous fantasy sorts of things.

And now I love Rhys Ifans.

One general thing I've found is that changing sorting from "Suggested for you" to "Highest rated" often gives me better choices.

There are far too many great movies on Netflix to list so I'll just put down a few classics:
  • The African Queen
  • Charade
  • His Girl Friday
  • The Apartment
  • Double Indemnity
  • The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance
  • The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly
  • A Fistful of Dollars
  • The General
  • Sunset Boulevard
  • The Bicycle Thief
