Best movies of the past decade?
« on: May 15, 2020, 06:59:49 PM »
Was just looking for some movies to watch and noticed not many from the last decade really stood out, they mostly seem to be remakes, sequels, marvel movies etc. The big short is one that comes to mind, what are your top movies from the 2010's?

Agreed, The Big Short was really good. I thought Thor Ragnarok was fantastic, and I liked Interstallar and Inception (both Christopher Nolan movies IIRC). What else... The Revenant, Arrival...

I don't understand why so many people are that excited about your name. Well, no arguing about taste.

I don't do Hollywood films, they are all much boom and no character, even if they manage to get a sort-of story.

But if it's about anime, then I would nominate "Violet Evergarden" as all-purpose weapon (bad pun intended), "Kaguya-sama - Love is War" for the romcoms (the commentary makes it even better than the manga) and "Attack on Titan" for the action department.
Also Sakurasou for it's unique characters, Isekai Shokudou for the take on food stuff and "no game no life" for the experienced otaku.

Hollywood is good at what it is good at; Mad Max: Fury Road exemplifies its strength and was my favorite action movie (possibly relevant that I don't like action movies generally).

I also don't like horror but It Follows was my favorite in that genre followed by Mother! and then Midsommar (the latter is, of course, ridiculous but the story arc for the main character is very well done and it is refreshingly uncompromising). If you consider Synecdoche, New York to be psychological horror, it is better than It Follows though.

I generally hate Wes Anderson but Moonlight Kingdom was very good.

For drama: I, Tonya; Amour; Room; A Separation; Cloud Atlas; though maybe the best was Upstream Color.

Some of my favorites are dark, cynical comedies. Two that I recommend are Thank You for Smoking and Grosse Point Blank.

Those are both great, but neither are from the past decade. I can't believe GPB is 23 years old!

War drama - Dunkirk
Action/geek - Ready Player One (I might be projecting though, because I really like the book)
Set in India/not what you expect - Andhadhun (available on Netflix)
Indie film - Sing Street
Animation - Spiderman into the Spiderverse (not really a sequel)

I agree with the above
Mad Max: Fury Road; Inception; La La Land
