Best and Worst Jobs
« on: August 22, 2013, 05:15:06 AM »
I didn't know where this fit, so I'm putting it in the Off Topic thread.

It's the Wall Street Journal's recent list of the best and worst jobs. Mathematician tops the list.

Looks like we lost first place to mathematicians, damn. Still an awesome job with great benefits.

WTF, some of those on the bottom should are VERY good jobs in Ontario... particularly

Mail Carrier (awesome hrs, decent daily walks, 45-65k/yr)
Garbage Collector (stinky job, but awesome hrs and about 50k/yr)
Firefighter (the wait list is super long cause it's a great career, 45k-90k/yr)

Hah, as a child care worker (I make 80k plus and only work every other week) trying to become a nurse (in-demand, well-paid work with reasonable compensation and pretty flexible hours), best and worse obviously means different things to different people.  I would rather die than do math all day.

I can't believe you make 80k as a childcare worker! I have worked on childcare, I never made over $20k...

This seems like an a study very clearly put together by people who:

 1. Work in an office 9-5
 2. Do not believe anyone can enjoy a physical job
 3. Directly tie salary to how "good" a job is and don't care about other benefits (see firefighter)
 4. Don't include "how likely to get this job" (lol Philosopher is #12? wtf)

What's the difference between software engineer and computer programmer?  About $30k?

The linked article is from 2009.

The 2013 list looks significantly different, and includes "financial planner" at number six.  "Mathematician" falls to number eighteen.

The ones at the bottom look more fun to me - I like being a rousabout, even if it is just over summer!

Thanks, sol. I didn't even notice the date.

I will say that I'm happy that my profession is even higher on the second list than the first.
