Not sure looking like you're a Nobby no-mates at the biggest music party of the year is a winning schtick.

Romania? I like the tune though. So smooth!

Was that the one that had to play all the instruments himself because the band didn't show? Poor lad.

I think I found a youtube channel that is livestreaming it. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pznrzvUICwQ

Am trying to find the beginning. There was the give peace a chance, and now its a very orange group that's not in English. I don't have any subtitles or anything.

Edit; they're wearing white, the lighting keeps changing.

That sounds about right for Eurovision.

Well, only problem is it added a dumb watermark in the middle of the screen. For Eurovision. Its distracting. But the competition has begun! (yes, I'm behind. that's ok, I'm not European so can't vote anyway)

I love him!

Last year he commented on an act (Serbia maybe?) and said , "It looks like salons have opened back up" and it lives rent free in my head. I think it every time I see a person with great extensions.

For just straight up songs I would listen to, this 90's child loved Sweden.

Iceland, Serbia, and UK also earning spots on my playlist next week :)

Public vote by telephone blocks voting in your own country for your own country but there are 6 million Ukrainians in other European countries now who aren't blocked by that system.  I don't care because it's another small victory against the Russian aggressors.

Hey, UK second!  First time this century we've done well.  Congratulations to the lovely Sam Ryder.

Just that as you are in Australia you can't vote for Australia but if you were in Europe you could.  There are six million Ukrainian refugees in Europe who couldn't have voted for Ukraine if they had stayed there but as refugees now can.  The influence of the expat vote in Eurovision is always a matter of conjecture, of course.

Not sure what you mean. I voted for Ukraine.

Not sure I follow still but it's ok.  I think everyone voted for Ukraine as a show of support, as in everyone I know who voted, voted for them, amongst other countries. I don't vote for the UK unless it's a good'un. In fact, I've never voted for them before, ha ha.

The bookies had Ukraine as the favourite from the start. Having said that, I don't think they could have won without a decent number of points from the juries too so that was good that they got a few douze's.

I see Piers Morgan is saying it was rigged. It's not rigged - we voted for them! That's how it works! Whether we voted for them because the song was the best is irrelevant, there are no rules for the public vote apart from a limit of 20 pp. I can vote for the best hat if I like.

Anyway, I hope they can host next year somewhere somehow. I mean no-one really cares where it is held or who's paying for it.

Serbia: strangely compelling.

We totally loved Serbia. No idea what she was singing about but it was great.

We hated Sweden and Iceland.  Australia also terrible.  Our family liked UK, Serbia, France, Moldova. Ukraine OK but my 13 year old is upset as in her opinion Serbia was robbed.  I have no idea.

Were huge Maneskin fans and liked their new song. Damiano looked like he'd hurt his leg.

Mika was great as usual.

My 13 year old daughter is a serious muso type and i think she liked the fact that the Serbian woman took it seriously and is a proper musician.  She hated all the more poppy acts although she liked Moldova with the accordions.

Watching Eurovision.

France - I thought they were mislabeled and were really Spain. Am I just that clueless about French music, or was this unusual? I really liked it though.

I can confidently state that your hosts are just as annoying as hosts in the US. Though your fashion is more interesting. The plus and minus 15 seconds buttons are really nice for this.

Anyone know the name of the flute Ukraine played?

I like the Germany song, and that singer is a real musician.

Lithuania sounded French to me. Clearly I am hopeless with musical styles. And languages. But it was pretty.

Moldova. I want that song. How do I get that song? Its awesome. Got no clue what the words are, but that's ok. I want that song.

Australia - does that guy always do the face mask thing? Or just for this song?

Yes, I skipped through all the fluff. Watched the whole thing in about 2 hours I think.

@Sibley

France sang in the Breton language and went all folk. This is very out of character, they normally do a big belting ballad in French. Given their result I think we'll be back to the ballads next year.

I don't know about every country but it's standard practice here for our local commentator to just talk over the hosts/ gently mock them etc. Their segments are so awkward and embarrassing but they have to do something when the sets are being changed and I think the poor things sometimes have to fill when there's a delay, which makes it even worse! The female host kept disappearing - I think she must have eaten a bad prawn before the show or something!

No idea on the Ukrainian flute but it appeared last year too so it's a keeper.

The languages were defo confusing this time! I think French & Spanish definitely popped up all over the place and now I don't know if they are sometimes spoken in those countries or what. But the beauty of Eurovision is "who cares" just run with it.

The Australian guy has Aspergers (which is what the song was about) and I have seen him in a mask before but I don't know if it's just an artistic representation of masking or he doesn't want to be seen! I think hiding your face/emotions stops you connecting with the audience. The public certainly scored him poorly!

Cute story about the Australian entry:

Sheldon saw Conchita Wurst perform and win the contest in 2014 and decided "that's what I want!". He became obsessed with the contest & Conchita. Then all his dreams came true when he got picked to rep Australia this year. The best bit - he got to meet Conchita during his time in Turin.

I didn't realise that the Aussie guy had Aspergers.  As a neurodivergent myself (not ASD though) I want to like it but he was BAD.  Nice that he got to meet Conchita Wurst though.

The commentators were irritating.  Alessandro Cattelan is equally annoying on Italian TV in Italian but I was amazed that he actually speaks decent English. Who knew? Made me like him slightly better.  I actually quite liked Mika with all his suits.  I think he did an OK job. Laura Pausini is an institution here in Italy.  Kind of like Italian Cher or something.  Been around a long time and knows how to belt out a tune.

My favorite was probably Norway as they were truly in the Eurovision spirit.  But also loved Moldova and Serbia as stated above.

It was great to hear Maneskin's new song (we're big fans) but it looked like Damiano had seriously hurt his leg.  I hope he's OK.

TIL that I like Breton folk music. Doesn't really surprise me, I tend to like that style.

There were actually 2 different instruments the Ukrainians used. The one I was asking about is the telenka. Neat sound. https://www.classicfm.com/music-news/kalush-orchestra-ukraine-eurovision/

Overall, it was a really neat way for me to hear music that I otherwise have no idea about. I have Moldova and Ukraine songs alternating being stuck in my head.

Oh we loved it.  My 13 year old said that all her school friends (Italian kids since we live in Italy) loved the Serbian song too.  My daughter is in a special music class full of kids who are really into music so maybe they're different from most 13 year olds?  It reminded us a lot of Marina Abramovich.  We've been singing it for days now at home.

Couldn't resist bringing this back: the BBC will be hosting in 2023 because of the on-going war in Ukraine. So that particular bullet has not been dodged by coming second!

Various UK cities will be bidding to hold the competition.

Ok, have been watching music videos on youtube. All of them. Stayed up way later than I planned tonight.

Early favorites are the Edgar Allen Poe song (Austria) and Instead I Wrote A Song (UK).

Solo (Poland) is good. Watergun (Switzerland) gave me chills. I am, as ever, a sucker for traditional-inspired pieces, so Moldova's is cool.

Not sure why all the strong women songs, but am loving it. Queen of Kings (Norway) is good. Portugal's I didn't like the video but the music was catchy so I didn't watch, just listened.

Will have to watch the live (recorded) performances later. Very much past bedtime. I have a list a mile long I have to get done tomorrow.

This year I haven't watched them all prior. Might still do that. I've just watched a compilation of a few seconds each. I like Norway, Albania, Australia (of course), UK & France. I do like that Poland one, and DH like the video :/

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
