Anne Murray question
« on: January 14, 2017, 02:41:06 PM »
Question for older (than me at 41) mustachians):

Something I've wondered for awhile and just realized I have a great group to ask and it's definitely OT!

Was Anne Murray considered a sex symbol when she was popular?  I remember liking her music (and still do at times) and a lot of her songs are love songs or sexy and it makes me wonder how she was perceived by the public (or you?) at that time since I was old enough to hear her music but be oblivious to that aspect of it.

Thanks for satisfying my curiosity.  :)

I don't think so, I think she was viewed as very wholesome. I am old enough (56 yo) - but As a woman I may have missed this perspective.  For sure, teen boys were not interested. Wrong type of music, targeted for older demographic as that time.

I'm a 61 yr old male, she was not a sex symbol, I'll agree with wholesome.
But really, it's whatever does it for you.
A women that sticks with me, and I don't consider her a beautiful woman, but
she exuded sex appeal, was Tina Turner.
And the 'Money Honey' Maria Bartiromo has been high on my list for 20 years.
 Well, enough about me :-)

I thought she was pretty. But she never consistently put herself out there via sex appeal. Back then that was a little easier. I don't remember singers like Carly Simon or Janice Joplin doing so either.

Here's a picture from her in the '70s when she would have been 30ish.

Does that look like someone guys would drool over?

Farrah Fawcett and Cheryl Ladd were hot.  Anne Murray could charitably be described as "plain."

I think that picture owes a lot of awfulness to the hair and clothing fashion of the day.  Try this.

She was pretty.  Just not barn burning hot.  Nor interested in trying to be.  But I guess it's just up to taste.

Thanks!  Interesting perspectives, all!  Nice to have my curiosity satisfied too.  :)

I have never seen pics of her when she was younger.  I agree with EricL and would say she was pretty/cute based on those posted.  I did watch a documentary about Janis Joplin on Netflix recently that mentioned that it was painful for her not to be seen as a sex symbol and she tried to be.  Don't know if that was accurate or not though.

I do think it is a loss that in our current culture, sex appeal is generally more highly valued than actual singing voice or songwriting ability.  I have a tough time picturing someone making it big and staying big who wasn't seen as attractive/sexy.  (Although I guess I see Adele as attractive and quite talented but not what would generally be considered sexy?)

Have to agree about Tina Turner.  She's an amazing woman and her legs are killer.

My dad knew her in university (UNB).  She was a phys ed major!  I don't believe she was considered to be hot at all, but was well liked in general.

She's fun to follow on Facebook at times and has definitely aged well; I hope I look as good as she does in 30 years. :)  I remember hearing some of Anne's songs as a child and forgot about her until I started listening to Dawn Langstroth and found out that she's Anne's daughter.  Talented family.

Very surprised to see someone talking about Anne Murray, who is from my area.  I thought the original poster may have also been from this area, but nope.  I'm a bit to young to remember her in her prime.  I've never heard anyone from this area refer to her as a sex symbol....again maybe I'm just a bit young.

My father also went to UNB at the same time as her, I don't believe he knew her though.
