Flat Stanley
« on: January 16, 2015, 10:44:15 AM »
My daughter's first grade class is doing a Flat Stanley project.  For those of you that haven't heard of Flat Stanley before, it's a boy that gets flattened so he can mail himself around the world in a letter to visit lots of places.  Stanley then gets his picture taken at lots of places, just like vacation pictures, and tells a story about where he has been.  I know we have Mustachians from all over the world so if you would be willing, could you print out Sylvia's Flat Stanley and take some pictures of him at your location or if you're going to visit some place and write a little bit about it?  It doesn't have to be something super amazing like the Grand Canyon or anything, the kids are going to plot the locations on a map so the county courthouse, beach, snow, landmarks etc would be cool for the kids to read about and plot.  Her project is due by March 1.  I know we have some Australians on here so it would be really neat for the kids to hear about how it is summer there right now while we are cold and snowy.

I live in St. Louis so if you have a Flat Stanley that is looking for a place to visit, I will gladly host him here.  We can go see the Arch, Anhesuer Busch brewery (if it's thought appropriate), Busch Stadium, view the the rivers and, depending on time and weather, I might be able to take him kayaking with me on the Missouri or Mississippi Rivers.

Thanks for any help you can offer.

Does it have to be printed in color?

I can get him in front of some Vegas landmarks for you sometime in the next week or so.

No kids here, so forgive my ignorance.  I have heard of Flat Stanley, but never took pictures -- please provide some more direction.

Are we meant to take the picture to make it look like Stanley is life-size?  or paper size?
Do we put anything in the picture to make it known that this is YOUR Flat Stanley?  I would assume there is some type of database of pictures out there with everyone's Flat Stanley pictures. How do we make it known that these pictures are taken just for your daughter?  Should we add a callout from Stanley that says "Hi Sylvia"?

I'm in Phoenix and this might get me out and looking at my adopted city.  I'll try and do it, if I can find a printer...  May get me to actually get some ink for my printer as well.

The little brat looks like Macauley Culkin in his Home Alone days :P

I'll try and get him walking across the Harbour Bridge for you. I will look ridiculous holding him up but hey, people with selfie sticks look weirder.

Thanks all!  He doesn't have to be in color.  I forgot the pics on my home computer but I took him kayaking this weekend.  I took some pics of him on the boat and held him in the foreground as I took pictures of the river.  It's cool for the kids to see their Stanley in the picture-my fingers are in several pics so it doesn't have to be professional quality cropping.

Do we just print him and take a photo of him someplace, and email you the photo.

I live in Europe and if we do any travel between now and March 1, I could take him along.  Do I just google to find his image?

Sounds like fun.  I'll get some pictures of him hanging with my dog around downtown Dallas.

The picture of my daughter's Flat Stanley is attached to my initial post.  Here are some pictures I took of him kayaking with me last weekend.  Something similar with him in the picture is great.

As a mustachian, I make no apologies for my terrible flip phone camera. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollo_Theater

Her project is due by March 1.

So probably like a week before that so she can put it together?  Maybe mid-late Feb?

I'll take a pic or two from Fairbanks.  It's been in the -40ish range here so it's a great time.  There's ice fog.  :)
I did this for my cousin a while back and sent a whole packet with a bunch of pictures and a letter describing things here, like how we have to dress in the winter.  At the time I was living in a dry cabin (one without running water) so I got a picture of Stanley in the outhouse.  Apparently her teacher told her mom that they'd never received such a detailed response from anyone before!

Ditto.  We're doing this for a nephew anyway - we'll try to get some animals from the University's reindeer farm in it.

Here's Flat Stanley in Deep Ellum. The neighborhood was founded in the late 1800s and and is a part of the city of Dallas. Deep Ellum has a long history of food, music, and art that continues today. Stanley and his new canine friend are in front of one of the Traveling Man statues overlooking the local train station and downtown Dallas.

We got some pictures of Stan in Vegas a few weeks ago (attached), and also brought him up to Seattle on our trip there for the Super Bowl, but then totally forgot to take him out for pictures.  Whoops!  You may want to crop some of these.

1) Stan at the world's tallest ferris wheel, the High Roller.

2) Stan near the Wynn.

3) Stan looking at the Stratosphere.

4) Stan having a little fun at the AVN show. My wife got mad at me for this one, but hey, it's Vegas!  Stanley should have a little fun.  Also maybe don't show this one to your daughter.  :)

Stanley visited Turkey and got a few pictures in Istanbul.

The first and second photo are at the Sultan Ahmed Mosque (also known as the Blue Mosque due to the blue tiles in the dome).  http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sultan_Ahmed_Mosque

The final photo is Stanley inside the Süleymaniye Mosque. http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Süleymaniye_Mosque

Not sure if I'll be able to get more pictures... Stanley got a little crunched up in my purse today. Flat travel may have its benefits, but occasionally there are some issues.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
