A New Reason to Love the 49th State
« on: January 11, 2014, 02:22:58 AM »
I just found out that in the great State of Alaska you cannot get a DUI on a bicycle. That is right up there with the fact that there are no snakes IMHO.

I love this place.

There is no drunk in public law though?

It seems there's a million things a cop could charge you with (public nuisance?) if they were so inclined, the fact of a DUI on bicycle not being a law not withstanding.

As a former Alaskan resident, I'd rank the annual payment up there, well before a DUI law. (Although the no snakes was pretty good. My mom loved that)

In states where you can get a DUI on a bicycle, is it the same type of DUI as driving? Thousands in fees and loss of license type DUI?

There is but being drunk in public won't get your license suspended. If I get a DUI (in a car or other vehicle) I lose my drivers license and my license to drive ships which means I'm out of work.

I was out to dinner last night with a State DA. I learned that the laws vary widely from state to state. Some states have reduced penalties, others do not.

One of my relatives was killed by a drunk driver. Yay to laws about it.

Hope it wasn't you?

You can get a DUI on a bike in Ohio. It's a vehicle and you can drive it.

You know, I almost posted something positive about DUI laws instead, but chickened out above and I shouldn't have.  I don't care if you are on a bike or a car, you can still hurt people if you are riding drunk and cause accidents (although, yes it's more likely with a car).  If you are drunk, you shouldn't be on the road.

And just what the hell do you people have against snakes, anyway?  Looks like speciesism to me.

While I agree with your final conclusion, most of the anti-alcohol stuff is bullshit, drinking age should e 18, and MADD as an organization is fucked.

We need to educate kids about alcohol and make it okay for them to have it responsibly at a younger age.  Drunk driving is never acceptable, but most of the anti-drinking stuff is just terrible.

No comments re MADD, but I have no issues with an 18 yo drinking age, it's just figuring out how to get there safely. Lived with a French family for 3 months when I was 19 and the French kids had a totally diff attitude than Americans.
