Three things top my very long list:

- Finally got married, and to the best guy (for me) ever!

- Never have to do the get up/get dressed/go to work grind again.

- No money worries. How the hell did that happen? This MMM thing really does work!

Being able to take a long, hot shower whenever I want.  I always feel it's one of the best luxuries in life.

Crawling into a bed with clean, crisp sheets.

white hotel sheets and a thick soft comforter with the air conditioner turned down to 70 deg at night.

and

Throwing food away that we didn't eat. We have so much food we can throw this much of it away ??!??!?! . ((not that I like throwing food away - I don't)

I have a very clear memory of when I was a kid once getting a very serious scolding for throwing part of a half eaten half-bologna sandwich away that in retrospect accounted to 1/3rd of a slice of bologna, and maybe 1/2 a slice of bread.... now I can choose to buy all this food and then throw it away when I am tired of it !!??!! crazy

NoCreativity, this answer really really bothers me. Throwing away food would make me feel irresponsible, not rich. There's nearly infinite reasons for this, but here's a couple:
  • Needlessly filling landfills. If you are going to waste your food, the least you could do is compost it.
  • There's lots of hungry people. Plan your business and eat what you buy. If you have money to throw away, perhaps you'd do better to give it to someone who could use it.
I understand you meant no harm by this, but this is not being rich, it is being neglectful, which is very much against the point of this forum.

You're right. I'm wrong. I'm sorry.

But have you ever not made an entirely "happy plate" and raked off the half eaten remains of whatever you were noshing on into the compost bin? That's what I meant. As the concept of mindfulness seems to be a trend in this thread, the intention was to acknowledge that if you did not eat the entirety of your prepared meal you were so fortunate and "RICH" that you are able to realize you literally had too much food. However, if people bring desserts or junk over and leave them I will regularly throw those away as I'm less likely to eat them if they're not hanging around... some people want to watch the world burn?

Also, I sort of equate "rich" with "irresponsible" as in kings in Arab countries are pretty rich, but most likely very wasteful and irresponsible.

No need to apologize! I understand you meant no harm by it. This is just a sensitive issue for me as I have worked a fair share in Africa and have seen things that have changed my view on food, big time.

In all sincerity, not since I've worked in Africa. My wife and I make a point to use the food we buy to its full potential. If the plate has food on it after the meal, it becomes leftovers. A good week is one where no food goes in the compost bin. That doesn't happen all the time, but we make it a point for it to happen often.

If this happens, then my view is to save it for the next meal. Its not only more frugal, it is less wasteful.

Ha! I'll step off my high horse and agree with you here. If sugary treats, or unhealthy food, comes in our house, it goes out via the compost 95% of the time. We have given it away to others a few times... but that is a rarity.

See, people like that are not rich. They are ignorant and childish. They are not doing anything worth doing, neither for themselves or others. Their life is possession rich, character poor. A rich man is a person who needs nothing and who appreciates everything.

I never expected this thread to go on so long. I'll add another.
We spent the last four years in hard saving mode, to pay for my school. I recently graduated and got a decent job paying about double what I was getting before, and suddenly money doesn't feel so tight. I started a new hobby, beekeeping, and today my wife asked how much I had spent on it. About $200, I guessed. No comment from her except that they haven't paid for themselves back yet, with the honey we have gotten so far. I feel rich, knowing that I can indulge in a hobby for the first time in years, and still be saving.

Oh, that's my plan for within the next year or two! Can I ask how you got into it?

(Most of what I buy is beeswax, not honey, and that's already expensive. Look into selling that to up profits, if you haven't already.)

I'd like to hear a little more of this if you don't mind, I'm currently in a LDR and we got a long way ahead, and I'm a sucker for love stories too! :)

So far have not sold anything, and probably won't for quite a while. Fresh honey makes great gifts though.
How I got into it? My daughter nagged me, and it is something I have always wanted to do anyway. I happened to mention it to an elderly relative who keeps bees, and he offered to sell me two hives cheap, since he is getting too old to keep as many as he has. I had to assemble all the equipment, and he would fill it with bees and enough brood and honey to get them started. Cost me 50 bucks for the bees, a real steal as he threw in about 20 bucks worth of frames.

I had another relative build the first few actual hives, since he is a skilled carpenter. Since then I have been building all my new hives (supers) as the bees increase in numbers and need more space.

I ended up buying all the frames that the bees build their comb on. These cost $18-$20 for a box of five, and it takes ten frames to fill one super. Not sure exactly how many boxes of frames I have bought, about 13 I think, so I have spent $260 just on frames, plus $50 for the bees, and maybe $30 on incidentals like screws, lumber. So roughly $340 all told, and maybe I am forgetting some costs.

If you buy bees commercially, add in another $100 or more for the bees, plus the cost of the supers, which appears to be $40-$50 each, and you need at least 3 supers for each colony of bees. It isn't cheap getting started.

If you are a half-way decent carpenter, the supers are not hard to make. I have been making a couple a week in my spare time, and gradually improving my skills. It was harder making 90 degree corners than I had suspected! Eventually I hope to start making the frames too, as they are quite expensive. I'll also hunt around for some cheap supplies. Have not found any yet. Craig's list locally is pretty pitiful.

It looks like, if you purchase everything new, one hive of bees will cost you roughly $300 just for the bees and basic materials. This is if you don't go crazy buying all sorts of extra gear like a fancy bee suit (unnecessary. A hat, mosquito net, long-sleeved shirt and gloves are all you need. The net cost me $2.) My suggestion is to start gathering materials now. Build or buy used the supers and frames. Create a home-made bee-suit using a turtle-neck shirt, hat and gloves. Visit a local beekeeper to observe and get advice.

Not having to work.
Not worrying about money.
Paid for house.
Paid for cars.
Paid for plane.
Everything else is also paid for.

I can do pretty much everything I like to do when I want.

I remember when I was little and could open trading card packages. Not that I got many good cards but....

Nowadays I feel rich by making a quick meal and watching a movie at the end of the day, and knowing that I can buy TONS of candy for a cheap price (not that I do). Sadly BearPaws went up in cost per package at the farmers market ($2 for 24 days of treats, now $1 for 6 days). D:

@Jet711 - what are bear claws? In the U.S. This refers to a pastry filled with almond paste. But it sounds like in Canada, this is a candy.

BearPaws are a type of soft cookie. Search "BearPaws Cookie" up on Google Images. Should be made by Dare.

Taking the time to cook real breakfast in the morning instead of hustling out the door with a granola bar on the way to a hectic job in the city.

Having FU money.

I taught my fiance the ways of MMM and she has been kicking ass at saving, home cooked meals (her specialty before), etc. The other day she came home from work and her employer had made some crazy demands and honestly were just being assholes. She felt frustrated and said she had to stay till January and I asked her why... "Because I want to make sure I get the paid time during the vacation I am going to take in November and December, that's close to $2,500 in income".

I laughed and showed her the emergency fund she had built up. At that point I could see her truly understand the value of freedom that brought. She didn't have to stay and she knew it. That feeling is beyond comforting.

-- The amazing feeling of having options.  We could drop everything and live free on the road for years.  Or we could buy a house somewhere out in the country, in cash!  A cheap house at this point, but still.

-- Being able to help out friends or family members.  My sibling went through a very rough patch of unemployment and other demoralizing life-events. I loaned a few thousand dollars (my idea) and don't really care if I get paid back.  I secretly consider it a gift.  Sibling is now employed at a good job & is pulling their life back together.  I feel fulfilled, knowing I could help and be there when needed.

-- Someone else mentioned buying art.  I've started collecting on a very modest scale, with inexpensive works by artists who are just starting out. I love having real, original paintings and sculptures around.  It adds somehow to the atmosphere of our home (which by the way, is a crummy apartment -- making this a bit incongruous). I have a real non-Mustachian weakness for interesting & rare objects of all kinds.

My wife mentioned gulping down cold drink (perhaps in a restaurant), rather than sipping--feels like you have so much, you don't need to sip.
I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.

Right now, I have options, so I feel rich. Our kitchen sink is having all sorts of issues. And while I am going to try and DIY the problem, it is nice to know that I *can* call for professional help if I need to. It would suck to pay that much money, but it's not like we won't be able to eat or pay the mortgage.

Being able to pay for things my kids need. This includes everything from replacing their outgrown, or worn out shoes to paying for braces to saving money in their college funds.

One of my kids had some learning and mental health issues this year. It was so, so nice to be able to just pay for the help she needed so she could get treatment right away. All her teachers seem to assume that parents have no money and therefore have to put their kid on a waitlist for publicly funded treatment. It felt great to be able to call up the necessary doctors and say, "I'd like the next available appointment, please." followed by just writing a check for the cost.

I have no idea why I feel this way. I grew up incredibly spoiled and never lacked for anything.
