« on: October 28, 2013, 10:10:27 AM »
i was just thinking about this, i have massive windows all around and get really good sun in this tiny 200 sqft apartment. what's the easiest way to grow veggies here? maybe herbs? i like cooking so tomatoes, bell peppers, anything i guess would be great.

anyone successful?

Most herbs are pretty easy indoors especially if you have a south facing window.  Parsley, thyme, and oregano work well for me.  Green onions also grow really well and are super hardy despite constant shearing off of their tips.  I've grown habanero peppers indoors, but generally peppers and tomatoes don't seem to do so well indoors for me.

Many vegetables might not do well with the amount of daylight they can receive in the winter.  They wouldn't necessarily die, just not produce/bear well without the amount of daylight they could receive in summer.

This was my experience growing herbs in some huge south-facing windows during winter. They produced some tiny leaves - not really a reliable supply for cooking.

My friends grew hydroponic tomatoes in their apartment in Brooklyn. They required lots of fussing over and also weren't super productive.

If you need more light, you can rig up any cheap flourescent light a couple inches from the plants and leave it on for a few hours a day.  Flourescents work great as grow lights.

Yead depending on where you live, it's going to be hard to grow herbs without a big east-facing window with direct light.
I grow as many herbs as possible from April-October and when they are big enough I cut/freeze or pesto them and use throughout the winter. (cutting often promotes more growth)

You could always just get an Urban Cultivator! They start at only $2,200 :) http://www.urbancultivator.net/kitchen-cultivator/

"Greens for a fraction of the cost"   (the fraction being, 300/2 ?)

Veggies will be even harder. But you could always try spinach, lettuce (they like cool temp) and bush beans can product a lot without getting too big.

Have you ever thought of growing microgreens?  They grow best indoors.  We do ours in our mud room under florescent lights.  They are so yummy on salads, sandwiches and as a garnish on anything.  They are also packed with nutrition.
