The Prudent Homemaker: Eat for 40 Cents a Day
« on: April 06, 2015, 08:25:46 PM »
Thought Mustachians might appreciate this excellent 10-part blog series by a Nevada mother of seven named Brandy. She's really changed my thinking about food purchasing and preparation, more so than any other home-economist since Amy Dacyczyn.

Eat for 40 Cents a Day
  • Introduction
  • Eat More Meatless Meals
  • Buy in Bulk
  • Make It from Scratch
  • Only Buy Food When It's at Its Lowest Price
  • Grow More in Your Garden
  • Glean
  • Eat In-Season Produce
  • Eat More Soup
  • The Price Per Pound, or in Other Words, Comparing Apples to Oranges {especially good}
  • Snacks

You had me at Amy Dacyczyn. She was the first one to open my eyes! I will never get rid of The Complete Tightwad Gazette. It's my bible.

I'm a huge fan of Brandy as well -- so industrious!

She makes me feel really lazy. She does these "this week's frugal accomplishments" posts about all the stuff she does during the week, and it makes me feel tired just to read it! Besides all the gardening, she homeschools and makes some of her kids' clothes and presents and whatnot.

Is she doing this all by herself with seven children and running an active blog.  This seems very suspect to me.

Amy is the godmother of modern frugality. She totally changed the way I looked at spending. I still go back to re-read her newsletter for inspiration.

Bandy is great as well. She has a fascinating story of how she took care of her family through some very lean years. Her creativity is beautiful.

Enjoy them both.

In Brandy's defense, she has a few less children than me and it is entirely possible to do all your own cooking. She seems to do most of her clothing shopping at thrift stores and garage sales and just makes special items for the kids. I suspect that her online time is less than mine (reading blogs, MMM forums, mindless surfing, etc). She posts about twice a week at most.

I think the amazon affiliate program helps her family out financially. She has taken several free online courses in photography and does take lovely photos for her blog. Its simple and delightful. As a side hustle, she does garden tours once or twice a year. Smart lady!

I'm sure that if Amy Dacyczyn were a blogger today, she would be highly criticized and people would suspect her of being fraudulent as well.

The comments on her "Frugal Accomplishments" posts are a gold-mine of household frugality tips.

We also have similar growing conditions (we are L.A., she is in Vegas) and her tip to use glass canning jars as ad hoc cloches for protecting seedlings has been incredibly useful in my yard.
