I hate to point it out, but this was classified under "humor" on the New Yorker site. 

Lack of recognition of even the most obvious ironically intended comment seems to be a pervasive characteristic and actual perverse point of pride on this forum but I mean, sheesh....

Beware The Onion.  It's full of this kind of slightly deadpan stuff and they don't even label it humor at the top of the page.

Fair enough! I didn't catch the "Humor" part and, being a midwesternern, I thought: "Man, these New York people must have a lot of money for that to qualify as normal." I was chalking it up to HCOL, old money and some serious tone-deafness from a east coast mag read by wealthy people.

Humor makes a lot more sense :)

If labeling in all caps, as the New Yorker does, doesn't work then not-labeling in The Onion style would be expected to work better with this crowd?
