The Moneyless Manifesto
« on: November 07, 2012, 07:02:25 AM »
Just ran across this: The Moneyless Manifesto by Mark Boyle.

In this new book, the Moneyless Man, ex-businessman Mark Boyle, not only demystifies money and the system that binds us to it, he also explains how liberating, easy and enjoyable it is to live with less of it. Mark will help simplify and diversify your personal economy, helping to free you from the invisible ties to money, and making you more resilient to financial shocks. The Moneyless Manifesto will enable you to start your journey into a world where money takes on a new meaning.

Given Boyle's moneyless philosophy, it's probably not surprising that you can read the entire book online for free if you want. I haven't read it thoroughly yet, but in skimming some parts it seems to be a cross of ERE/MMM-style pragmatism with a bit of crunchy granola style back-to-the-landism. The jist of the book seems to be in deciding how far behind you might want to leave the money economy: a little bit, like MMM (with his nice home and stuff, still pretty mainstream in terms of lifestyle and convenience) or all the way through varying degrees of simplification, with complete moneylessness as its most extreme endpoint. (Boyle's claim to fame is that he lived entirely without money for three years.) As he points out how much we've come to depend on and why we really could live pretty well without most of it if we chose, I am reminded very much of ERE's manifesto.
