The Island Where People Forget to Die
« on: October 24, 2012, 11:01:14 AM »
I thought you all might enjoy an article in the NY Times - The Island Where People Forget to Die: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/10/28/magazine/the-island-where-people-forget-to-die.html?pagewanted=1&_r=0&hp

There are some principles woven throughout the lives of the folks on Ikaria that are definitely mustachian - growing their own food, eating healthfully, making do with what is nearby, self-sufficiency, sharing....

Wanted to bring this article to the attention of the MMM community.

There is an entire Greek Island of Mustachians. Here is what a typical person does. Have a garden? Check. Take a nap every day? Check. Hang out with friends all the time, with no regard to what day of the week it is? Check. Not eat too much meat? Check. Make wine, then drink it? Check.

It's called Ikaria. And the reason they're in the news is because the people live really, really long lives.

Awesome!

[MOD EDIT: Merged two topics on same article.]

Sounds just like Vilcabamba, which turned out to be a hoax, despite the many scientists who believed it and published papers and came up with explanations.  Books were written ("The Centurians of the Andes," etc.)

Not saying this is, just be wary when you hear outlandish claims.

Anyone interested should read this story (which is - briefly - mentioned in the NYT article), it's pretty fascinating:

I am a former teacher who accumulated a bunch of real estate, retired at 29, spent some time traveling the world full time and am now settled with three kids.
If you want to know more about me, this Business Insider profile tells the story pretty well.
I (rarely) blog at AdventuringAlong.com. Check out the Now page to see what I'm up to currently.

Other traits of the Ikarians: herb tea and communism. Hmmm...
