Alan Boxer wore op shop clothes and never splashed out on cars or holidays, but when the former public servant died last year, he left behind an art collection worth close to a million dollars.
The public servant in question didn't retire early but then I know what the pension conditions are like for public servants of that era (both parents and two grandparents were public servants) and I wouldn't have either. But he was clearly canny enough with his money to be able to support his passion for art well into retirement. To me, that's the difference between being frugal and being cheap, being able to indulge in your passions without needing to stress the money. My hat's off to him.
