Back before there was MMM there was a web forum called the simple living network (SLN).  I think I started hanging out there in the mid to late 90s.  It went through several permutations but a few years ago was closed by its owner and things migrated to the Simple Living Forum, which is hosted by the New Road Map Foundation.  NRM was orginally formed by Joe Dominguez and Vicki Robin, authors of Your Money or Your Life.  People can nitpick at YMOYL, but it was a great gateway to LBYM for many of us.  I think MMM is clearly a more vibrant community these days but I will always recall SLN fondly since it was a great source of counterculture viewpoints back when I was the age of most of the audience here.

I've seen some of the SLN folks here (Hi IL and Spartana!) and have wondered how many others there might be that I haven't noticed or go by a different name.

If you ever participated at SLN please take a minute to say hi or whatever, just would like to know who's out there.

Thanks!

ERG  (a/k/a Yossarian over at SLN)

I'm AustinKat both here and on SLN. I found out about MMM through someone on SLN (can't remember who). I still read SLN; it's still plugging along.

Kestra on both. I still enjoy both forums, though don't post much on either right now.

Hi all!  fidgiegirl in both places!  SLF means a lot to me - I credit the support there to being able to pay off my debt and keep saving.  If some people like a bit less face-punchy place, it's a nice spot to hang out.  :)  I like both forums but they do have their different personalities overall.

Hi... I was in the old SLN under "MeMyselfAndI" so I figured I might as well bring back this old ID.  I did check out the New Road Map one under a different id, but didn't stay there long.  I was there just long enough to hear LHAMO mention MMM :)

I was, but I don't remember what my user name was. I was a member for many, many years. Loved it.

Hi guys! Spartana (and once upon a time She-Rah) here. Also moseyed over here from the simple living forums. This forum reminds me of what the SLF was 10 years ago when I first found them. I had newly quit my job to take a few years off work while I was younger, and the inspiration and ideas I got there was what made me realize I could turn my sabbatical into permanent retirement. I'll be ever grateful to that site for allowing me to "see the light". However the new version has morphed in more of a frugal homemaking, DIY, gardening, cooking,, etc... kind of forum and of less interest to me now. Seems that not too many people are interested in ER, FI, living alternative ways to do both, finances, budget travel, etc... (stuff they talk about here) so feel this is a better fit for me now. But I still visit over there occasionally as I like the people. Many seem like old friends!

cdttmm in both places.

I still check in at the Simple Living forums pretty regularly because it feels more like family than MMM. But there is way more activity over here so I spend a lot of time here just reading. I don't do much posting unless I think I have something really interesting to add.

Herbgeek in  both places.  I post less here, as this is a younger crowd, with different values/goals than where I currently am in my life.

Present!  TVRodriguez both here and on SLN.  Like MeMyselfandI, I also found MMM b/c of a mention by lhamo.  I'm not a huge poster in either forum.  I was on the old SLN forum and am on the new one (same name on all).

The SLN folks have been really really helpful to me as a sounding board over the years.  Definitely helped reinforce some principles of simple living that I didn't find in my daily life.  They cheered for me through lots of changes, especially in getting rid of DH's student loans.  I have found SLN overall to be quieter but more supportive than MMM--it's a smaller group, which contributes to that sense, I think.  Even those who disagree generally are willing to listen to other viewpoints, although once in a while you'll find a troll.  That can happen here, too, but I think the larger crowd makes it easier for simple differences to bloom into insults, perhaps due to the anonymity factor of a large group.  But the MMM moderators like arebelspy are also "on it" when dealing with truly rude people, which is good.

SLN is more of a small town, while MMM is the big city.
