REI closing its stores on Black Friday

Great move from a great company. I realize that this is a PR move (similar to the Patagonia "don't buy this jacket" ad campaign from a couple of years ago), but it is nice to see a company not so profit driven and have a tiny bit of mustachian values.

I was just thinking of posting this. I've been a happy REI customer for a long time thanks to their quality products and customer care. The prices can be a tad antimustachian, but I'm almost always impressed with the quality and life of the products i buy and they seem to treat their employees well too. I think this is an awesome promotion. I too suspect it is at least partially a good marketing ploy but I've know enough REI employees to believe there is some genuine company culture behind it too. Either way it seems like a move we should support. If their customers support this they'll do it again next year and maybe a few other retailers will follow. I double checked and they are also closed on thanksgiving. I don't buy many Christmas gifts but I'll be buying any I do at REI this year.
