"Putting in less than the maximum effort is cheating yourself." Talk about a punch right to the face.

And now I have tears in my eyes...

Get a grip -

"The first date, is the biggest date, October 17, 1989. That was the day of the Loma Prieta earthquake." - "The earthquake forced us to prioritize our life and start planning it instead of letting life just happen to us"

- yet he worked for another 26 years - FFS

Living a meaningful life doesn't have to mean FIRE for everyone at an early age, just because it does for many here. I thought it was a touching article.

But that's what he was suggesting no? - his next sentence was "The time was now. We started to save for retirement ' - great but for 26 years.

Seems to be a trend lately these "famous" people publicising their retirement notices - I mean who realy gives a shit, are they afraid they will be forgotten and come significant.

Quite a few great points in that piece, and this was definitely one of them.  Thanks for sharing, Prairie Gal.

+1.   Some definite overlap with mustachian concepts.

Agreed, 11ducks.

Thanks for posting this! I just had a bout with an illness that had me thinking about how my time is uncertain and unbelievably precious, yet it's something I waste regularly. It also made me realize how fortunate I am to be strong and healthy and have a body that regularly does whatever I want. These ideas are so simple and well known, but they somehow get lost in the shuffle of daily nonsense.

When I read this article it reminded me of Martin Heidegger when he was asked how we should better lead our lives and live with authenticity, he replied tersely that we should simply aim to spend more time in graveyards.

By the way he lived sort of a "mustachian" lifestyle in the countryside but was also a nazi :D

Perhaps he switched his mindset at work as well as his personal life.  The change between a yes man struggling to survive in a corporate world to a man who puts his principals first is profound.  Ironically, those types tend to do better in their careers in the long run, so maybe he was doing what he loved until it no longer held value for him.
