PBS story on Culdesac (car-free urban living)
« on: April 01, 2025, 06:44:23 PM »
Our host spent the last winter living in Culdesac, an urban community outside Phoenix intended to make car-free life desirable and affordable. Now PBS is giving the place some attention:

I've wondered how people would live somewhere like this during the extreme heat of Arizona summers, and I appreciate that the story addresses this. It makes a good point, which is that roads, parking lots and other expanses of asphalt contribute to a heat-island effect that makes the heat problem worse. Dense walkable neighborhoods with trees and other sources of shade will actually stay cooler than the standard urban template.

There was also a NYT article about Cul de Sac last week. Here’s a gift link: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/03/25/climate/car-free-arizona.html?unlocked_article_code=1.8k4.gvwP.MKXyAI-DoNIc&smid=url-share

It’s great to hear that the project has been successful!
