Offensive Frugalism?
« on: May 26, 2013, 03:04:31 PM »
An old High School classmate on Facebook posted this. I haven't looked at the rest of the website, but reading the article sort of reminded me of MMM. It shares some of the same ideas, but I'd say more extreme and much more offensive.

It is an article reviewing the work of an earlier "frugalist" who was active 1969-1996. For him it seems more than just a way of living, but sort of a super-political statement. Some of the criticisms of MMM seem to be that his practices could bring down consumerism, but this earlier author appears to have practiced ultra-frugalism (you could even call it "early retirement") for that very reason.

That said, he does make some very good points:

Quote
Where do you start? Stop loading your biocomputer (brain) with the mental junk food dispensed by the TV and the radio. Stop eating sugary food and medicating with cheap cigarettes and booze. Stop wasting your money on “labor-saving devices” that mysteriously require you to work longer hours than your “backwards” ancestors to afford and replace them.

What do you think? Does he go too far?

I do not find Mann terribly radical. Maybe that's explained by my having read "Steal This Book" at 14.

From what I've read, I don't find it offensive either. However I think it would be more offensive to average Joe.

That said, I don't agree with simply giving away things you've already earned (like Real Estate) versus using it to generate passive income and freedom for yourself and family. I think simply spreading the message of anti-waste and anti-consumerism alone makes the world a much better place. Money seems to serve a necessary purpose (as it seems to have always existed) as an intermediary for exchange.

"Whether you agree with Mann or not, or you’re just interested in the philosophy of minimalism and anti-consumerism, I Was Robot is a must-read."

What timing!  Maybe it's at the library for those that really follow the minimalist way.

From the article:
Quote
To push his radical ideas, Mann created the Little Free Press newsletter, which he intermittently published until his grandson murdered him in 1996.
O_o
Am I the only one curious about what happened there? Did his grandson get mad about never getting Christmas presents? I haven't been able to find anything online aside from the fact that his grandson beat him to death...

Unfortunately, the only way to buy that book is to get the $4.99 Kindle edition. The few remaining print copies cost over $100 on Amazon and chances are your local library doesn't carry them. :(

The blog post smells like an ad for the ebook. =-)

I think parts of it are rather amusing. I like the word "iTurd." LOL

I am always amazed when I see people have espresso or other coffee machines at home or hear that they stand in line to buy Apple products.

That said, I think it's a bit strange to sell the rental properties. I'm down with the anti-consumerism and anti-hamster wheel though.
