OECD says I live in the best place on earth!
« on: October 07, 2014, 06:15:24 AM »
The OECD has recently released its latest regional wellbeing report.

http://www.oecd.org/gov/regional-policy/how-is-life-in-your-region.htm

Australia is the best country to live in (of the 34 it surveys) and the ACT (Canberra) is the best region to live within Australia (of the 361 in the world).

Some people are too much in love with lists and rankings.

Queensland lost points in education, but also for income. I think an area with a low COL like up here (how many houses can you get in Sydney for $260k half an hour from the CBD??) should get bonus points that get offset against income.

And Canberra? Seriously? I note there's no category for climate...

Well, we have actually been the best in the world for several years (according to the OECD), and I love it that we don't have the really hot nights (complete with mosquito coils and mosquitoes) I remember enduring in Brisbane as a child (or the bluebottles I got stung by the first time I went swimming at Redcliffe).

Australia really has it made - one "world's most livable city" poll seems to have Melbourne on top quite often, another has Sydney, another has Brisbane, and I think Perth and Adelaide are have pretty high ranks too.

lol I live in Canberra too.

there are too many complaints about lane-merging, or cyclists vs cars, or political parties, or footpaths.

no one seems to notice that we live in the richest city in the richest country in the history of the world.

Our standard of living is higher than kings and queens!

Deborah, don't tell everyone, then the secret will be out!

As for the Queenslander...the climate comment, I've just lived in the states for a year where for a few months it was painful to go outside because it was -20C outside. Canberra never has a season that isn't welcomed, beautiful autumns! crisp winters, amazingly colourful springs and almost-tropical summers.

Go on way and you hit the beach. Go the other and you hit the snow.

I'll take that climate, mixed with the richest, most progressive, well educated and most modern people in the country any day.
