Title: My Self Reliance
Post by: vern on February 17, 2018, 12:37:57 PM
This guy built a cabin in Ontario using only hand tools.  (He reminds me of Dick Proenneke.)

In addition to posting a lot of HD cabin porn, he talks about avoiding debt and getting land and materials cheaply.

Worth a gander...

Great channel.   Every time I see him cutting logs with a hand saw or drilling with a hand powered drill I can’t help but to think of the “muscle over motor” article.  I think he paid off some 700k in debt, started his own construction company and lived frugally from there out.  Lots of entertainment and wisdom to be found on his channel.

It's interesting to see the "I can do everything all by myself" approach vs. the communitarian/cooperative "you help me-I'll help you" Amish-style approach.  Seems...empowering and lonely at the same time?  I wonder what it is that draws some folks so powerfully to these kinds of solitary pursuits.  A reaction to an economic system that makes us feel so out of control of our own destinies sometimes mixed with a Western outlook that places extremely high value on individualism, I guess.  He's definitely got something to be proud of!  Also, those saws and axes look SCARY sharp.  Very cool videos.

I guess personality is a factor. I am very much a solitary worker, myself (just not as skilled as this guy). DH can work alone pretty well, too, especially if there is no time-pressure. In general, however, his style is more social and communitarian - whereas I go out of my way to avoid involving other ppl.
I can see the benefit (assuming like-minded, cooperative ppl) in working together as a community. Still, it really goes against the grain of my personality to have to rely on others.

So I can see the appeal, really - but also the risks.

Both Videos are really aprreciable. Crafting your own cabin is challenging. Not that much easy. I have my home based workshop and working with kreg router table (http://routertable.me/kreg-review/), but never have thought of doing this. You inspire us to make cabin for oneself. Thanks.
