A Mustachian Way of Travel

Technically this isn't 'mustachian' in the most common meaning of the word. No travel hacks I want to present here or other money saving tips. But this traveler for me embodied so much of the MMM-philosophy in the way he traveled, that I still think it deserves a place here.

This Dutch guy has walked from The Netherlands to Jerusalem. That's 6000 kilometers (that's 3730 miles). In 6 months. Without money. He left in spring/summer and came back home in November. Got quite a bit of news coverage around here, but I only discovered he had a YouTube-channel this weekend. He has filmed his whole trip and I thought his videos were very inspiring. And I hope you find some inspiration in them as well.

The obvious mustachian thing here is of course: Muscle of Motor. He did just that. Walking to Jerusalem is a fantastic achievement in and of itself. And he did it without money. Not to be a cheapskate. But to show that the world isn't as horrible as the news likes us to believe. That people are kind and willing to help. And that really resonated with me. Because mustachianism thought me, that there are much more important things than 'getting rich quick'. And I think he shows that here too.

In this episode he talks about why he does this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOz-9y0A2CQ

Or: how to keep going, when it gets tough (applicable to so much more than just walking a pelgrimage without money): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2-2wAoASAuo

His other videos in this serie are nice to watch too. He meets a lot of other inspiring people and he talks about what he encounters along the way :)

I really hate the term begpacker as I usually associate with people who travel in my mind quite unethically Like this

But this is an interesting concept with this guy, will have a look at a few of his videos

Jup, I've come across those begpackers before and I understand the criticism, especially in the really poor countries, where people can't choose to beg, but otherwise really couldn't eat.

I know, in his case, that he normally pays for his travels. And I liked the idea behind it a lot, in the way he expresses his point of view. He said quite some things that resonated with me.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
