"I think there's just a broader level of uncertainty ... and when (consumers) are uncertain, caution starts to prevail," CEO Steve Easterbrook said on a conference call after the results were released.

So he's blaming the economy on less fast food being eaten?  I was under the impression people were just getting smarter about their food habits.

There are always stories about tough times for, and the impending demise of, McDonalds.

It's a well business journalists can return to again and again; it never goes dry.

I don't think anyone thinks McDonalds is going to disappear tomorrow.

But that doesn't mean that they may not underperform.

McDonalds is no longer cheap.  The folks who used to go in for a quick $1 gut bomb may be looking to Taco Bell or similar that are actually cheaper now.

Given that McD's has never been known for quality, they may be making a mistake by jacking up their prices for their quick, gut filling, tasteless fare.

At where I live (e. Europe), the competition for McDonals increased alot in the past 5-10 years.

They are on the same level as pizza joints or shis-kebab shops. The price, food quality is similar. And McD increased the price in the last 2-3 years, yet left the quality and quantity the same.

No wonder their income is going down.

Wow, a phone plan for fifteen bucks!
