Title: Investing instead of Overpriced Wedding
Post by: CanuckExpat on March 15, 2018, 04:18:54 PM
Did You Spend Too Much on Your Wedding? (http://www.slate.com/articles/business/moneybox/2015/05/wedding_calculator_what_would_i_have_if_i_invested_instead.html): "If you’d invested in the stock market instead, here’s how rich you’d be."

According to my notes we paid a total of $17,650 for our wedding in 2012, including absolutely everything - rings, dress, reception, cake, etc.  However, we received ~$9,500 in cash gifts, so net is $8,150.  I guess you could count the value of the non-cash gifts too, not sure how much of that we would have actually bought though.  According to the calculator, if we invested instead we would have an additional $14,233 now.  Probably still worth if for the tax-advantaged status ;)

We also read that MMM link before we got married and would have loved a $10 wedding.  Unfortunately that would have led to my in-laws never talking to us again, haha.  Oh well, I would say we still only spent a third of what they would have wanted.
