How very mustachian: Buy Nothing New Month
« on: June 26, 2012, 05:14:15 AM »
Apparently, Australia's Buy Nothing New Month - especially the City of Sydney's support of it - has kicked up some controversy. The whole concept is very mustachian though...love this little reader comment explaining the philosophy, especially this: "Buying more stuff is a distraction and we're on a treadmill that is wearing us out; both us, and the planet. Fortunately, we know what does make us happy, what makes for a good life, and the even better news is that those things don't cost very much."

I'm surprised that a municipality is on board with this, simply for the sales tax implications. But then, I'm from one of the most consumerist areas in one of the most consumerist countries on the planet.

I think it's one of those illustrate-what's-possible campaigns. "Extreme" actions shift people's perception. The net result will be a very small dip in consumption and a lot of people who are more aware of the issue.
